PHOTO JOURNALISM/ PHOTOGRAPHY:

PREREQUISITE: none

Photography includes a brief study of the history of photography and various types of cameras, films, papers, and darkroom equipment. Other objectives of the course include acquainting the student with the use of a basic 35 mm camera, giving the student experience in processing and printing black and white film, and acquainting the student with techniques in journalistic photography.

JUNIORS-SENIORS

PREREQUISITE: Sponsor approval

The yearbook staff member will study various subjects concerning yearbook production such as terminology, page design, theme and ladder development, news and feature writing, style, utilizing the Macintosh computer as it applies to yearbook, and paste-up procedures. The learning process takes place during the first quarter, and the rest of the year will be spent in actual yearbook production. The staff member will also be expected to sell ads to support the yearbook.

NEWSPAPER:

One credit

SOPHOMORES-JUNIORS-SENIORS

PREREQUISITE: Sponsor approval

The newspaper staff member will study various subjects concerning newspaper production such as terminology, page design, utilizing the Macintosh computer as it applies to newspaper production, paste-up procedures, news and feature writing, editorial and sports writing, style, and legal aspects of responsible journalism. The newspaper staff will produce one issue of the school paper each month. Approximately two weeks of each month will be dedicated to study, and the remaining two weeks will be spent completing steps toward producing that month's issue.

PREREQUISITE: None

Technology Communications is an introductory level class designed to expose students to the knowledge and skills required to enter into the world of media production and multifaceted technology communications successfully. Skills development for these students via enrollment in this class will entail the use and knowledge of digital camera, videotronic mixers, audio mixers, audio formatting, video panels, and the operations and use of lab equipment and modulators for closed circuit telecommunications broadcasting across the school district.

ENGLISH II:

PREREQUISITE: English I

English I is a course that bases grammar review on the composition process such as sentence structure and paragraph components of final compositions. Compositions will include exposition, narration, descriptive, and research. Literature evaluation of all forms: novel, short story, drama, poetry and letters will provide a springboard for some writing assignments.

ENGLISH IV:

One credit

SENIORS

PREREQUISITE: English I, II and III

English IV is a course based on reading, research and writing skills. Composition shall be viewed as a process moving from prewriting to a finished product or final draft with emphasis on content, organization and mechanics. Areas shall include a business section of letter writing, resumes and a career research paper as well as the primary areas of descriptive, expository, creative, literary and research. Literary study includes all forms: novel, short story, poetry, essay, and drama of predominantly English writers and mythology of various sources including original writing.

English Composition I:

1/2 credit/three college hours

This course is a prequisite for Composition II and is designed to advance you skills in reading and writing so that you can succeed both in the classroom and on the job. Reading and writing are related skills. Becoming better readers allows us to become better writers, and becoming better writers allows us to read with more discernment.

English Composition II:

1/2 credit/three college hours

PREQUISITE: ASSET TEST Administered by Colby Community College and Teacher Recommendation

Since this is the final required writing course most students will take in their education, Comp. II will prepare you to handle academic writing assignments for any two to four year school. You will continue to write with resources so that your reader can tell exactly what you are borrowing from others as you develop your arguments. You will put into effect the basic skills you learned in Comp. I more efficiently and without teacher prompting.

ENGLISH I:

FRESHMEN

PREREQUISITE: Junior High English

English I consists of the study of grammar and its application to writing complete sentences, paragraphs, compositions, and research papers. Subjects covered in compositions will include book reports, essays relating to literature studies in class, and various subjects of current importance to the students. One six-page research paper will be required each semester. English I also consists of a general study of literature including short stories, mythology, drama, and one or two novels.

ENGLISH III:

One credit

JUNIORS

PREREQUISITE: English I and II

English III focuses on American Literature from colonial to modem times via the short story, the novel, the poem, and the literary essay. Group discussions and creative writing assignments provide an in-depth look at the literature. With a special emphasis on the writing process and the six traits of writing, students shall write several major papers including narrative, informative, persuasive, and research. Students will also be required to give an oral presentation each semester.

Applied Communications I :

Speech I is a one-semester course which introduces the four major types of speeches: informative, persuasive, demonstrative, and extemporaneous. Emphasis is placed on research, note-taking, and outlining skills as well as speech delivery, vocal inflection, and effective gestures. Opportunities will be given for impromptu speeches and creative dramatics with children's literature.

Applied Communications II:

PREREQUISITE: Speech I

Speech II offers students opportunities to write and present speeches as well as the opportunity to perfect skills in all-league speech events: prose and poetry interpretation, solo and duet acting, informative speech, extemporaneous speech and original oration. Participation in MCL league meets is strongly encouraged.
