JH and High School choirs present Christmas Concert
The Plainville High School choir presented their
Christmas program under the direction of Connie Reishus December 5 at 7:30 in
the High School Auditorium.
The High School Mixed Chorus sang "Sing Noel, Noel" by Patsy Ford
Simms, "Calypso Clapping Carol" by Phyllis Wolfe and "God Rest
You Merry, Gentlemen" (a solo by senior Allen Brackeen). Sophomore Tanner
Dix performed "Jingle Bell Rock" by Joe Beal.
The choir continued the concert with "Light a Candle" by Jay Althous
and "Do You Hear What I Hear?" by Harry Simeone. Soloists continued
the performance with "O Holy Night" by Adolphe Adam sang by freshman
Gregory Harold, "Where Are You Christmas?" by James Horner sang by
sophomore Cassie Meyers and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" by
Johnny Marks sang by senior Josh Brackeen. The concert continued with "Silver
Bells" by Audrey Snyder featuring sophomore Aubrey Frederking and junior
Vanessa Owings on bells and "Hallelujah to the King" by Patsy Ford
Simms.
The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade choirs joined the High School Choir in
singing "Peaceful, Silent Night" by Ruth Elaine Schram.
Earlier in the concert, the sixth grade mixed chorus sang "What Shall We
Name Him?" by Audrey Snyder and "Ding Dong, Merrily on High"
by Lois Fiftal.
The Seventh and Eighth Grade Mixed Choruses sang "Kids and Christmas"
by Jill Gallina, "Song of the Faithful" by Jill Gallina and "Santa's
Choir" by Steve Kupferschimd.
FCCLA/FFA join for Christmas party
Twelve students and one teacher participated in
the annual FCCLA/FFA Christmas party December 15, 2005.
They took part in a dinner provided by the FCCLA and students who were there.
Pizza Hut delivered pizzas, seniors provided two-liter bottles of pop, juniors
brought desserts, sophomores brought side dishes, and the freshmen brought the
salads.
The students who attended were seniors Mackenzie Becker, Josh Brackeen and Alan
Brackeen; juniors Megan Plante, Samantha Hixon, Jessica Wilkens, ad Justin McCune
and sophomores Brooke Foster, Bretta Mick, Deanna Garvert, Terra Keil, and David
Becker. FCCLA sponsor Shari Tucker also attended.
At the Chinese gift exchange, everyone went home with a gift. M. Becker received
an alarm clock; J. Brackeen received a poker set, A. Brackeen received a Pizza
Hut certificate and a bag of chocolate; Plante received a teddy bear; Hixon
received a bag of chocolate; Wilkens received a Pizza Hut certificate; McCune
received a certificate to Staabco Entertainment; Foster received a certificate
to Plainville Short Stop; Mick received a fuzzy pillow and candy canes, Garvert
received a disposable camera; Keil received $5, D. Becker received a bag of
chocolate, and Tucker received a certificate to Pizza Hut.
USD 270 hosts Significant Senior Citizens' Dinner
USD 270 hosted the Significant Senior Citizens' Dinner Friday,
Dec. 2.
The guests began arriving around 10:30. Dr. Tom Nuckols gave the invocation,
and FCCLA members and choir members began serving the meal at 11:30. The meal
consisted of a traditional Thanksgiving menu including turkey, dressing, mashed
potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Pianist Leslie
Fogle entertained the guests during the meal with Christmas music.
The entertainment began at 12:45 with a welcome from Superintendent Dr. Harry
Austin. The choir performed the numbers from their Christmas Concert which they
performed the following Monday, Dec. 5.
Cardinals continue winning streak; defeat Natoma Tigers, 75 to 65
The Plainville Cardinals traveled to Natoma to take on the Tigers and chalked
up another win, 75-65. The cardinals entered the game with only one loss in
the early season.
The Cardinals and Tigers were back and forth in the first quarter of action.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was 19 to 17 in the Cardinal's favor.
The Cardinals make a quick run in the second quarter to lengthen their lead
on the Tigers to 8 at intermission. The score was 35 to 27. The third quarter
started off great for the Cardinals, but the Tigers closed in a little bit.
The score at the end of the third quarter was 52 to 40. The Cardinals made a
tremendous run to go ahead by 22 in the fourth quarter, but slacked on defense,
which gave the Tigers a chance to come back. The Cardinals went on to win the
game 75 to 65.
Scoring for the Cardinals were senior Justin Casey with 22, senior Brock McDowell
with 17, senior Taylor Dix with 12, junior Josh Brungardt with 11, and senior
Dalton Mick with 7. Scoring 2 points each were senior Scott Peavey, sophomore
Jason Dinkel, and sophomore Toby Ruder.
The next action for the Cards will be at Wakeeney against the Trego Golden Eagles
Friday, Jan. 6.
Some of the PHS Students were asked what the word gumpelfik
meant and these were some of their responses.
"It's Jenny's pet name for Forest", said Sophomore
Heath Rath.
"Another name for a heffalump on Whinnie-the-Pooh", said Freshman
Lauren Buresh.
"The gel that Mr. Willms puts in his hair to get that fabulous spike of
his", said Junior Samantha Hixon.
"A huge mole on Justin Lacy's head", said Junior Matthew Hageman.
"A garden hose", said Senior Raquel Marcotte.
Senior Brock McDowell came up with the correct meaning of the word "gumpelfik":

Cards leave Colby tourny with a 2-5 record
The Cardinal wrestlers traveled to Colby for the Colby dual tournament on December 9-10. The team finished with a 2-5 record. Friday the Cardinals had four duals. Plainville lost their first dual with a score of 33-43 to Shawnee Heights. Plainville then wrestled Oakley and won 45-26. Their third dual of the night found Plainville losing to Liberal 24-51. The last dual of the night the Cards lost to Valley Center 11-57. The first dual of Saturday morning was against Garden City. Garden won the dual with a score of 15-56. Winning for the Cards were freshman Dan Weigel (103), junior Luke Brin (152), and senior Connor McMullen (160). The Cards then wrestled later that day to see what they would place. They dualed Hoxie and Concordia. The Cards won against Hoxie 46-30. The Cards lost against Concordia 29-44. Overall the Cards finished 14th. Weigel finished the tournament with a record of 7-0.
Lady Cards defeat Natoma, 52-23
The Lady Cards took on the Natoma Lady Tigers at Natoma and took home a 52-23 victory, Tuesday, Dec. 13.
The Lady Cards out-scored the Lady Tigers 14 to 4 in the first quarter. They continued to out-score Natoma in the second quarter 16 to 5, making the core at half-time 30 to 9. In the third quarter, a strong sense Cardinal defense kept the Tigers to only 8 points while the Cards put 14 on the board to bring the score to 44 to 17. Scoring was close in the fourth quarter with the Cards scoring 8 and Natoma putting up 6 for a final score of 52 to 23.
The top scorer of the game was senior Holly Chew with 20. Others scoring including sophomore Aubrey Frederking with 9, senior Eden Rinehart with 8, and senior Caroline Hrabe with 8, senior Jenna Fellhoelter with 4 and junior Vanessa Owings with 3.
The next action for the Cards will be at WaKeeney against the Trego Golden Eagles Friday, Jan. 6.
The two freshman boosters of the month for December are Phillip Goering and Katelyn Thyfault.
Goering is involved in football. His favorite school lunch is pizza. His favorite Christmas Carol is "Joy to the world." He enjoys watching the real world.
Thyfault is involved in cheerleading, tennis, and FCCLA. Her favorite school lunch is burritos. She loves singing "Jingle Bells". In her spare time she likes to watch The Gauntlet 2.
