"Tonight, Tonight" - a Prom night to remember

"Tonight, Tonight" was the theme for Prom, although there was no theme song. Complete Music provided the entertainment for the evening.
The evening began with a social at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, April 22. Dinner followed the social, beginning at 7 p.m., and then the students viewed the Prom video which was produced by juniors Vanessa Owings and Megan Plante. The dance began at 8 p.m. and ended at 11 p.m.
At the dinner, Junior Class President Samantha Hixon welcomed the seniors, faculty and staff members, board members and classmates. Senior Class President Scott Peavey gave the response, and junior Vanessa Owings presented a reading. Josh Brungardt led in prayer.
The menu included salad, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, rolls, and cake.
Prom servers were sophomores Katie McQueen, Cassie Meyers, Bretta Mick, Aubrey Frederking, Aaron Becker, Ben Gehring, Jason Dinkle, and Joe Becker.
The dance began at 8 p.m. and the crowning ceremony began at 9 p.m. Cory McQueen and Raquel Marcotte were named king and queen.
Parents organized the After-Prom Party which took place at Auction City Limits from midnight to 4 a.m. The theme was " Be All that You Can Be." Sponsors provided students with T-shirts and hats as souvenirs. Food and soft drinks were available throughout the night as students played games to ear chances to win various prizes provided by local businesses.
The games included Hand-To-Hand Combat (four-man pedestal joust), the PHATS Machine (a gun simulation game provided by the National Guard), I Love the USA (bean bag toss), Bombing Range (toilet paper toss), money machine, Night Vision Practice (black light balloon game), Who Wants to be a Hunderdaire?, Friends Game, Capture the Enemy (pop bottle ring toss), Landmine Game (penny pitch), Sharpshooter Certification (Tina's electronic darts), Target Practice (Styrofoam cup game, balloon dart game, cork gun game, football tire game), Fire in the Hole (skeet ball game), Bombs Away (Plinko), Bombing Game (cup and goblet game), R&R (hole in one), Officer's Club (casino games), Navy Seals (duck game) and Minefield (cake walk).
Winners of big prizes included the following: senior Justin Casey-dorm refrigerator, junior Jessica Wilkens-futon, junior josh Brungardt-CD/DVD player with DVD spinner and movies, senior Starla Willenberg- teeth whitening certificate and toothbrush, senior Mackenzie Becker- TV with a DVD player, senior Connor McMullen- portable DVD player, junior Vanessa Owings-cashmere robe and slippers, senior Garrett Frederking-27" flat-screen TV, senior Josh Eichman-27"TV, senior Chelsea Moos-TV with DVD/CD player, senior Tyler Brungardt-5-CD changer stereo, senior Tracy Rudman-digital camera and printer, senior Jesse Husmann-area rug, junior Michele Wessel-HP printer/copier/scanner, junior Samantha Hixon-iPod Nano and Dalton Mick-patio table and chairs with an umbrella.

Band and choir join to perform last concert of year

The high school choir and band combined their efforts for their last concert of the year, Monday, May 1 at 7:30 in the auditorium.
The band and choir had been under the direction of Connie Reishus, but Joshua Conner served as the guest conductor. He had been substitute teaching for Reishus while she underwent hip replacement surgery. Leslie Fogle accompanied the choir on the piano.
The Jazz Band kicked off the concert with four numbers: "Rock Around the Clock" (arranged by Jerry Nowak), "A String of Pearls" (arranged by Bob Lowden) and "Hello Dolly" (arranged by Jerry Nowak).
The choir continued the concert by performing six numbers. The first song was "A Branch of May" (arranged by Greg Gilpin) and featured sophomore Cassie Meyers as a soloist. The next two numbers were "Great Gettings' Up Mornin" (arranged by Roger Emerson) and "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor" by Irving Berlin. Soloists for the next song were seniors Chelsea Moos, Rachel Thompson, Mackenzie Becker and Ashley Dehner. The Choir rapped up their portion of the concert with "Bless the Broken Road" (arranged by Mark Brymer) and Ain't No Mountain High Enough ( arranged by Roger Emerson).
Members of the concert began the last segment of the concert. Senior Jesse Husmann performed a percussion solo with "Drum Corps on Parade" (arranged by John S. Pratt). Four other percussionists joined Husmann to perform "Drummers Five," a number for which they earned a I rating at the state contests. Those joining Husmann were junior Vanessa Owings, sophomores Jason Dinkel and Aaron Becker, and freshman Lauren Buresh.
The rest of the concert band continued the concert with "Galiardo" by John Bull. Featured instrumentalists were seniors Mackenzie Becker, Jessica Wilkerson, and Spencer Blecha, and freshman Ross Copelan. The next two songs were "Yorkshire Ballad" by James Barnes and "The Pink Panthere" (arranged by Victor Lopez). The final number of the evening was "And the Angels Called" by James Swearingen.

May Boosters

The Boosters for the month of May are seniors Holly Chew and Garrett Frederking.
Chew is involved in volleyball, basketball, softball, and Stuco. Her favorite movie is Stigmata, and her favorite part of the day and week are the nights and weekends. Her favorite food is strawberries, and her favorite song is "I'm Alive" by Disturbed.
Frederking is involved in basketball, golf, PHAT, and youth group. His favorite movie is either Fast and Furious or 2 Fast 2 Furious. His favorite time of the week is any day that there is a golf meet or the weekends. A taco from Taco Express is his favorite food and "One" by Metallica is his favorite song.

April Boosters

The Boosters for the month of April are freshmen Ross Copeland and Kelsey Normandin.
Copeland is involved in football, basketball, and golf. He enjoys jamming to "The Suffering" by Coheed and Cambria. Joe's Crab Shack is his favorite place to dine. His favorite thing about being a freshman is golfing for PHS and starring in "Copeland's Big Adventure."
Talking about his nickname, he said, "We all know what it is, something simple like Cope."
Copeland's actual nickname is Rusty.
Normandin is involved in dance team, volleyball, and softball. Her favorite song at the moment is "Saying Goodbye" by Hawthorne Heights. Wendy's is her favorite place to eat. She does not have a favorite thing about being a freshman. Instead of a nickname she prefers to just simply be called Kelsey.

Graduation plans set for May 20

The PHS class of 2006 is set to graduate May 20 on Cardinal Field.
Juniors Matthew Hageman and Vanessa Owings will escort the class. Junior Luke Brin and Samantha Hixon will hand out the programs.
Former PHS history teacher Eric Gohl is set to speak. Principal Cherie Nicholson will present the awards and present the class. Board members Kevin Renk and Rich Frederking will hand out diplomas.
The class colors will be Red and Silver. The class flower is the Calla Lily. The motto for the class is "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." (Michael Evans)

FFA conducts its annual awards banquet

FFA held its annual banquet Saturday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m.
President Jesse Husmann welcomed everyone to the banquet. Senior Connor McMullen gave the invocation. Dinner served was roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, rolls, brownie fudge sundae, tea, and water. Greshman Colburn Patterson delivered the FFA creed.
Advisor Ryan Miller presented the awards and scholarships. Husmann received the Plainville Saddle Cub scholarship and the Peavy-Ott scholarship. Senior Eden Rinehart received the Plainville FFA scholarship. Receiving Greenhand Degrees were sophomores Miles Axleson and Amelia Keas and freshman Kassie Collins, Carson McMullen and Colburn Patterson. Receiving Chapter Degrees were sophomores Joe Becker, Derek Brumitt, Lacci Cunningham and Colt McCune. Senior Josh Eichman received a Star Award in Agriculture Mechanics. Patterson received a star award in Greenhand. Junior Luke Brin received an award for selling the most fruit and meat. Farm Bureau recognized senior Jacob Keas, McMullen, Rinehart, and Husmann.
Officer elections were conducted Friday, May 5 and were installed at the banquet. New officers for next year include President Seth Keas, Vice President Lacci Cunningham, Secretary Matt Hageman, Treasurer Joe Becker, Reporter Carson McMullen, and Sentinel Luke Brin.

PHS celebrates Cardinal Day

Stuco sponsored Cardinal Day Wednesday May 3 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
A lunch of hamburgers, baked beans chips, a granola bar, fruit gushers and op was ready for the students as soon as the bell rang.
The activities consisted of three different games: boxing, bull riding, and the bungee run. Students could also watch a movie in the auditorium.
Other students made up their own fun by playing hackey-sack in the front hall.
"I had tons of fun at Cardinal Day. All the games were fun, and it was great to just have a day to run around and have a good time." sophomore Bretta Mick said.

FCCLA celebrates honors at banquet

FCCLA held their annual banquet Thursday, April 20, 2006 in the Plainville High School gym. The seven officers for the 2005-2006 year were honored. They were Emily Jones, President; Brooklyn Foster, VP of Membership; Megan Plante, Secretary; Amber Cooper, VP of Finance; Deanna Garvert, VP of Recognition; and Bretta Mick, VP of Programs. Foster was also District B Secretary.
The executive council for 2006-2007 are Megan Plante, President; Bretta Mick, VP of Membership; Emily Jones, Secretary; Deanna Garvert, VP of Finance; Brooklyn Foster will serve as District B VP of Programs.
The banquet began with a paraded of officers, followed by the opening ceremony given by E. Jones. Jones gave a welcome, and Jacquie Plante3 gave the invocation. This was followed by a buffet style meal.
After the meal, Foster gave the New Membership Ceremony. The recognition awards followed. Becker, Foster, Cooper, Garvert, Kelsey Wyatt, Jessica Thompson, Plante, Hixon, and Heather Hageman received awards for competing in STAR events. The Power of One Awards was given to Becker, Dalton Brown, Garvert, Katelyn Thyfault, and Wyatt.
Junior Krystal Karlin was the top salesperson from Reader's Digest Magazine Sales with junior Emily Jones taking 2nd, and sophomore Terra Keil taking 3rd.
The FCCLA letter awards were given to Emily Jones who received a 3rd year letter award, and Brooklyn Foster who earned a 1st year letter award. Next came a time for thank yous. Members and guests also enjoyed a slide show presentation made by Deanna Garvert showing highlights from the past year. The 2006-2007 executive council, were also installed followed by a closing ceremony given by Megan Plante, President.

Senior Justin Casey serves on fire department

Senior Justin Casey is presently serving on the Plainville Fire Department.
Casey has always wanted to be a fireman and decided he would try it before he left for college. The training Casey receives is on the job, but there are many things he must learn first.
The payment for each callout is $15. Casey is not certain when he will begin getting paid, but he says, "I don't even care about the money because it is fun."
He is not certain if he will get excused from school if a fire happens, but he doesn't believe there will be very many fires during school hours.
Casey does not intend to stay on the fire department unless he lives in a smaller town and continues what he is doing.
"Not everyone gets the chance to crawl into a burning building and watch a fire," Casey said.

Lady Cards split double-header with Lincoln


The Lady Cards split a double-header in home action against Lincoln Monday, April 17. They dropped the first game with a final score of 15 to 20, but they squeaked by with a victory of 12 to 11 in the second game.
In the first game, freshman Kelsey Normandin pitched all 7 innings. Scoring 3 runs each for the Cardinals were senior Raquel Marcotte and Normandin. Scoring 2 runs each were senior Holly Chew and junior Amanda Plante. Sophomores Heather Hageman and Bretta Mick each came across home plate once.
In the second game, senior Rachel Thompson pitched all 7 innings. Scoring the most runs for th Cards was senior Katie Nicholas with 4 followed by Hageman with 2, Normandin with 2, Chew with 2, Mick with 2, and Thompson with 1.

Cards win both games against Lincoln

Plainville Cardinal baseball team won both games in a double header against Lincoln April 17 in Plainville. In the first game of the doubleheader, Plainville won with a final score of 11-1. Sophomore Toby Ruder pitched all six innings allowing only one run and only one run and no earned runs. Scoring in the game were senior Taylor Dix, senior Tyler Brungardt, and junior Luke Brin each scoring two runs, and Ruder, Sophomore Aaron Becker and sophomore Tanner Dix scoring one run.
In the second game, Plainville continued their success winning 7-3. Junior Jason Williams pitched all seven innings allowing three runs and only two earned runs. Scoring for the Cardinals were Brin and sophomore Ben Gehring each scoring two runs, with sophomore Aaron Dinkel, T. Brungardt, and junior Josh Brungardt scoring one run. The sweep moved Plainville's record to 7-1.

Track individuals experience success at their home invitational


The Plainville Invitational was held on April 18. The girls' team was able to score 55 points, while the boys could only muster out six.
Sophomore Aubrey Frederking paced the girls with 20 points of her own by winning the 1600 and 800 meter runs. Junior Vanessa Owings scored 19 ½ points for the Cardinals as she paced 1st in the pole vault, 2nd in the 100 meter dash, and 5th in the 4x1 relay. Freshman Lauren Buresh placed 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles, and 5th in the 4x1 relay. Senior Jenna Fellhoelter placed 3rd in the 800 meter run and 5th in the 4x1 relay. Also competing for the girls was senior Eden Rinehart and junior Samantha Hixon.
Senior Scott Peavey ran an 11.71 in the 100 meter dash to get him 5th place. Senior Jesse Husmann scored two points for the Cardinals by getting two 6th place finishes in the pole vault and the 110 meter hurdles. The other placer for the Cardinals was Freshman Kyle David getting 5th place in the 200 meter dash. Other competitors for the boys were senior Dalton Mick, Connor McMullen; junior Kennis Becker; sophomores Heath Rath and Jason Dinkel and freshmen Terry Sumner, Dan Weigel, Colburn Patterson, Eric Sears, and Greg Harold.

Cheerleaders chosen for next year

The 2006-2007 cheerleading tryouts were held in the high school gym Thurday, March 16. The Fort Hays State cheerleaders were the judges for the competition.
The ladies had to learn the Cardinal routine, a group cheer, and an individual cheer provided by the leaders of 2005-2006. Cheerleaders for the 2006-2007 squad are Sophomores Heather Hageman, Amelia Keas, Ashley Stroda, and Katie McQueen; Freshman Kiley Knouf, Lauren Buresh and Kateyln Thyfault, eighth graders are Amanda Casey, Abby Jones, Carle Morris, Brianne Plante, and Joselyn Wilkens. The Squad will be having their camp at home August 10 and 11. It will be conducted by members of the UCA (Universal Cheerleading Association).

Plainville hosts golf invitational

Plainville hosted their annual golf meet at Cedar Links Golf Course Monday, April 18, 2006. The weather was warm and breezy out on the links for the twelve Cardinal golfers.
Plainville has varsity, B and C teams. The varsity consisted of seniors Garrett Frederking, Spencer Blecha and Cory McQueen; sophomore Justin Lacy and freshman Ross Copeland. Golfing for the B-team were senior Tracy Rudman, juniors Andy Brown and Seth Keas and freshman Chris Fellhoelter. Golfing nine holes for the C-team were freshmen George Lovelday, Travis Bird and Carson McMullen.
Lacy was the top finisher for the Cardinals placing 8th shooting an 82. Frederking followed placing 14th shooting an 84. B-Team scores were as follows: McQueen with an 86, Blecha with a 92 and Copeland with a 104. B-Team scores were as follows: Brown, 100; Fellhoelter, 103; Rudman, 110 and Keas, 111. C-Team scores are: Bird, 64; McMullen, 66nd Lovelady, 71. Plainville finished 5th overall with a score of 344.

Next year's dance team ready for camp

The PHS Crimson Cardinal Dance Team tryouts took place Wednesday, April 5.
Dance team members for next year are freshman Michelle Adams, eighth-grader Chanelle Chard, eighth-grader Kassie Karlin, freshman Kelsey Normandin, freshman Danielle Parson, eighth-grader Bobbi Plante, eighth-grader Kendra Sturgeon, eighth-grader Paige Wilkerson and eighth-grader Krystal Wessel.
The judges for tryouts were FHSU Dance Captains. The dance team will be attending camp at Emporia.
