Two chosen for All-State Honor Choir

Two Plainville High School music students participated in the All-State Kansas Music Educators' Association Honor Choir February 23. They were sophomore Michelle Reishus and senior Chris Peavey.

Reishus was chosen for the special honor earlier in the year. Peavey, a first alternate, was called in February 14.

"I was amazed," Peavey said. "I never thought it'd happen."

Reishus and Peavey attended practice sessions beginning February 21 in Wichita. The rehearsals lasted all day for two days, and then a quick warm-up session the day of the concert. There was a dance and many exhibits by several music companies and colleges. Many other groups, both vocal and instrumental, also performed throughout the weekend.

The actual concert was the finals of the three day event. The All-State Orchestra went first, followed by the choir, and finally the band. All three groups, in addition to the jazz band, performed a combined number to close out the concert.

Juniors busy planning Prom for April 20

"Today's dreams, tomorrow's memories" is the theme for this year's Junior/Senior Prom. Prom will be April 20 in the cafeteria.

Beginning at 6:30 there will be a social that will last for about 20 minutes, followed by the dinner. They will be serving chicken with rice, corn, salad, baked potato, a roll, strawberry shortcake, water and tea. The junior class also voted on the prom servers. They include sophomores Joel Hrabe, Ryan Lovelady, Tyler Nelson, Alex Smetana, Terri Kenney, Jordyn Wilkens, Michelle Reishus, and Julie Hrabe.

The souvenirs have been ordered and the decorations are arriving. They are going for an elegant blue and silver motif. The souvenirs offered include a combination of a stem, key chain, and picture frame. They also included separately a mug, a stem, and candle, and a garter.

The dance will start around 8 and last until 11. The theme song is "November Rain" by Guns N' Roses. The DJ will be provided by Complete Music.

Choir performs Spring Concert

The Plainville High School choir performed their Spring Concert March 7.

The concert began with three numbers by the sixth grade chorus. The seventh and eighth grade combined chorus performed two songs. The high school choir was the final group of the evening.

The choir performed a total of six songs. They were "Just a Little Soft Shoe," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "A Peaceful Alleluia," "Get Happy," "My Way Back Home" and "Play for Me a Simple Melody."

The evening ended with all three groups performing "Let There Be a Voice."

"I thought the concert went very well," teacher Connie Reishus said. "My favorite number was 'Play for Me a Simple Melody.'"

Due to Reishus's recent medical problems, Stephanie Bjornstad stepped in to help the choir prepare. She worked with the choir on all the songs, as well as several solos for the upcoming district music contest.

The Cardinal Boosters for the month of March are sophomores Amanda Fogle and Alex Smetana.

Fogle has been involved in band, choir, and volleyball manager. In her spare time, you can find her hanging out with friends or listening to music. Her favorite food is Chinese. The Plainville FFA chapter had several participants in the Agricultural Mechanics contest in Goodland February 27.

The contest consisted of three areas: welding, carpentry, and diesel mechanics. Senior Chris Fogle received a ninth place rating in diesel mechanics and an eighth place rating in carpentry. Fogle took seventh overall at the contest.

"Yeah, I got lucky," Fogle said.

Senior Mike Langholz placed tenth at the event.

"It was yummy, " teacher Amy Krob said.

Golfing for dummies, by dummies. by Chris Peavey

You know, I once read an article about a chimp that could play golf. He wasn't great, averaging about 75 strokes on nine holes. His form was awful, but he could swing the club and hit consistently. He even managed to hit some good, straight, high-flying drives.

This chimp could take me with both hands (and a foot) tied behind his back.

If there are any of you out there who have either golfed with me or seen me golf, you know I'm serious when I say that I play like a low-grade moron with a motor deficiency. I've seen sock puppets with better golf games.

I pity poor Coach Krob. He took over the golf program from Ron Davis back in 2000. Little did he know that he'd be inheriting this gangly whiff-master. The poor man has tried to make me, shall we say, not stink. I've been introduced to more swing aids in the past three years than Tiger Woods was in his first fifteen. Everything will seem to go okay with the special club and net, the drives will be straighter and the iron shots will actually leave the ground.

Then I actually start golfing on a normal nine holes.

I am, to put it mildly, an errative golfer, Sometimes I slice it. Sometimes I hook. Sometimes I manage to hi the ball backwards. (We're not sure how that happens.) About this time, Krob throws his hands in the air and goes off to golf with the real. (I'm only half joking here.)

However, I do on occasion hit a good, solid shot. This is not a good thing. It's a false hope. The golf gods let lousy golfers hit one decent shot every once in a while, so that they don't wise up and quit,

But my troubles REALLY start when I land that ball on the green. My putting is truly awful. It's a little like Rain Man:

"Definitely, definitely need to hit the ball harder. Definitely. Oh too hard. Definitely too hard, definitely. It's definitely gonna go off the green. Definitely."

On the golf course, I have killed more woodland creatures than Ted Nugent. Ducks, geese, gophers, even fish (ESPECIALLY fish) fear my presence on the links.

Despite that, I greatly enjoy golfing. Because, as a wise man once said, golf is the only game where people can hit objects with clubs and mutter to themselves and not be committed.

I definitely agree. Definitely.

What does it mean?

The Cardinal Booster staff asked some PHS students if they knew the meaning of the word "gork". Below are some of their replies:

"It's what they call belly button lint." - junior Heather Hrabe

"It is Shrek's best friend." - freshman Kristen Meitler

"It means to gorge." - senior Ashleigh Turnbull

"It is some type of drink." - senior Tanner Nelson

"It is Kelcee on skates." - freshman Charlie Meitler

"it is a music instrument. " - senior Lacey Brin

"It is a female hog." -freshman Kelcee Meitler

"It is a giant fork, you know like spork means spoon-fork. Gork means giant fork." - senior Jason Lindsey

"It is some out space alien thing." - junior Carissa Fredrickson

GORK stands for "God Only Really Knows"

PHS BIG MOUTHS

Here is the talk of the school, if you haven't already heard. The word is:

Do you like to laugh? Well you are missing out if you don't buy the funniest video you'll ever see for $4. "The We-We and Wuke Sow".

Seniors are putting their thinking caps on for the first time this year for some real action in Mr. Shirley's court room.

Sometimes your first reaction isn't always the best. Example: If someone depants you, don't immediately bend down to pull them back up!

Happy Birthday to the most recently turned 40-year-old teacher here at PHS. The BIG 40! Don't worry, with age comes loss of memory, hair and teeth.

Needing a pair of bullet proof shoes? Ask Scott Wise.

The Booster staff would like to wish all the spring athletes good luck.

Only one more nine weeks left of school!
