Twenty-one students traveled to Concordia,
Kansas on Saturday, April 28 for State
Solo and Small Ensemble Contest at Cloud
County Community College.
The following students received a one rating at the contest: the trumpet
ensemble, members including senior Ashlee Grover; juniors Rhiannon Becker,
Stacy Dreher and Abby Morris; sophomore Lolly Garvin and freshman Michelle
Reishus; and junior Chris Peavey for a vocal solo. Those earning a two
rating include senior Hannah Deiber for and alto saxophone solo; junior
Matt Renk for a snare solo; juniors Libby Hrabe and Kayla Fisher, sophomore
Naomi Thompson, and freshman Jessica Casey, Laura Lacy, Kira Shumacher
and Amanda Fogle for a clarinet ensemble; junior Janell Darnell for a
solo; and sophomore Heather Hrabe and freshmen Aryn Garvin and Andee Marquess
for a flute trio.
"The judges were very tough this year.
The students did an excellent job," Teacher Connie Reishus said.
FCCLA sponsors awards
banquet
FCCLA held their annual banquet on April
30. The seven officers for 2001-2002 were honored. They were junior Rhiannon
Becker, president; junior Stacy Dreher, VP of Membership; sophomore Abby
Stagner, VP of Finance; Sophomore Carissa Fredrickson, Secretary; junior
Kayla Fisher, VP of Recongnition; sophomore Lolly Garvin, VP of Public
Relations; and junior Heather Plante, VP of Programs.
Garvin and Dreher were also honored for
being District B officers. Garvin is Secretary and Dreher is VP of Finance.
Awards were given to members for their years
of service. Those being honored for their years of service. Those being
honored for their one-year membership were freshmen Morgan Buck, Jessica
Casey, Jordan Finnesy, Terri Kenney, Laura Lacy, Amy Normandin, Lindsey
Plante, Quintin Plante, Michelle Reishus, Makenzi Rempe and Jordyn Wilkens.
Two-year members include sophomores Mandy Cox, Morgan Fellhoelter, Carrissa
Fredrickson, Lolly Garvin, Lacey Hamblet, Danielle Moos, Abby Stagner
and junior Jennifer Bland. Three-year members include juniors Rhiannon
Becker, Lacey Brin, Stacey Dreher, Jolene Eilers, Shanna Fellhoelter,
Stevie Finnesy, Kayla Fisher, Danielle Kenney, Katrina Jones, Abby Morris,
Heather Plante, Renee Post, Michelle Rath, Asia Schonthaler and Katie
Weigel. Four-year members include seniors Lindsey Hamblet, Cara Hansen,
Sarah Koehler, Lindsey Ostrom and Danielle Meitler.
The top Tom Wat salespeople were also awarded.
They include first place, Eilers; second place, Cox and third place, Lacy.
Power of one awards were recieved by Wilkens,
Buck, Kenney, Plante, Hansen, Fredrickson, and Eilers. Hansen completed
all six of the modules in the Power of One program.
At the end of the banquet, Hansen and Koehler
were both given the annual FCCLA scholarship.
Students honored at FFA
Banquet
The annual FFA banquet took place Saturday,
April 28. The banquet began with a welcome by freshman Matt McCune.
Dinner consisted of steak, baked potato,
corn, salad, dinner roll and cake. The steaks for dinner were prepared
by Mike and Stan Simon.
Advisor Ed Rath and FFA officers handed
out awards after the dinner. Senior Alan Austin received the Peavey-Ott
scholarship and senior Jason Stahl received the Plainville FFA scholarship.
Junior Mike Langholz received the dairy judging award. Freshman Aryn Garvin
received an award for poultry judging and horse judging. Freshman Jeremiah
Lumpkin received the award for livestock judging. Junior Chris Fogle received
an award for tenth over all at the ag mechanics contest and senior Auldin
Morris received an award for second place in diesel mechanics. Freshman
Aryn Garvin, Matt McCune and junior Matt Renk earned Greenhand Degrees.
Juniors Josh Cunningham and Chris Fogle earned Chapter Degrees. Cunningham
also earned the title of Chapter Star Farmer.
The 2001-2002 officers are Fogle (President),
Garvin (Vice President), McCune (Secretary), Cunningham (Treasurer), Renk
(Reporter), and Jason Rath (Sentinel).
Band performs last
concert of the year
The high school band performed its last
concert Tuesday, May 15, 2001.
Songs performed by the Concert Band included
"Broadway In The 90's," arranged by John Higgins; "Bright
Eyes," arranged by Walter Alan Finlayson and "The Light Eternal"
arranged by James Swearingen.
The soloists in "Bright Eyes"
included senior Ashlee Grover, juniors Rhiannon Becker, Stacy Dreher and
Abby Morris, sophmore Lolly Garvin and freshman Michelle Reishus. A saxophone
solo was played by Hannah Deibert. The song is titled "Largo and
Allegro from Sonata VI," by G.F. Handel.
The Jazz Band played four songs"Coldhearted,"
"The Charleston," " The Way We Were," "Crocodile
Rock," all arraged by Jerry Nowak.
Choir Performs Last Concert of the
Year
The Plainville choir performed its lst concert
of the year May 8.
Songs performed included "Joshua Fit
the Battle of Jericho" by Lon Berry, "The Flower That Shattered
the Stone" by Audrey Snyder, "Witch Doctor" by Stephen
Lawrence and "Candle In The Wind" by Elton John. Senior AuldinMorris,
Junior Chris Peavey, and sophomore Joe Kraushaar performed as the "Chipmunks"
during "Witch Doctor." There was also a song performed by the
combined chorus "Love Can Build A Bridge" by Carl Strommen.
"I thought the choir did an excellent
job," Connie Reishus said, "I think the choir has really done
a super job this year at each performance."
Loren Hemphill Leaves teaching
Loren Hemphill will end his teaching career
when he retires at the end of this school year. Hemphill has been teaching
for thirty-eight and a half years. He has been in Plainville for forty
years, but was out of the school system for one and a half years. Twenty-nine
of those teaching years were spent at the junior high. HE has since then
been the athletic director for nine years. He currently teaches current
events and psychology.
Hemphill said "I have had so many memorable
moments throughout my years at PHS. I cannot put my finger on just one.
I have no definity plans after i retire. I will miss the day to day contact
with the students but will not miss the late nights attending activities."
Track team competes at
Hill City.
The Cardinals participated in the Hill City
Invitational Track Meet on May 7. The girls placed 12th with 7 points,
and the boys placed 8th with 30 points.
Sophomore T.J. Staab threw the shot 51'4"
placing 1st. Staab also placed 1st in discus with 149'8" and 5th
in the javelin with 143'. Sophomore Jason Rath placed 3rd in the 100 meter
hurdles with a time of 15.96. Sophomore Scott Wise placed 7th in the 100
meter dash with a time of 12.06. Senior Matthew Rodriguez ran the 800
meter run in 2:10.12 placing 5th.
Junior Stacy Dreher placed 6th in the long
jump with a jump of 15'. The girls placed 3rd in the 440 relay with a
time of 53.53.
"At this point in th season the team
is performing at about the coachs' expectations. The athletes are will-prepared
in terms of physical conditioning but are still working on fundamental
parts of their events for maxium confidence and performance," Coach
Steve Buresh said.
Guys defeat Sylvan Grove
The Plainville baseball team played Sylvan
Grove on April 26. They won the first game by a score of 16-3 and also
won the second game with a score of 14-13.
The batting stats for the first game were
senior Trent Fuzzell, 3-3; sophomore Willie Ruder, 2-4; senior Brian Deutscher,
2-3; senior Jared Ganoung, 3-3; senior Kyle Dreher, 2-4; freshman Joel
Hrabe, 1-3; sophomore Wayne Cook, 0-2; and freshman Tyler Nelson 3-3.
Batting results for the second game were Fuzzell, 1-4; Axelson, 1-4; W.
Ruder, 3-4; Deutscher, 2-3; Ganoung, 2-4; Dreher, 2-4; Hrabe, 2-3; Cook,
1-1; Lovelady, 0-1; Turnbull, 0-1; and Nelson 2-4.
Pitching stats for both games are Deutscher with 4 hits,
2 walks and 9 strikeouts; Ganoung with 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 stikeout;
and Hrabe had 5 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout.
Lady Cards win one and lose one
The Lady Cards played the Sylvan Lady Mustangs on April
26, 2001.
The Cards played an extremely good first game, but fell
short in the end. They lost the game 8-7.
The Cards turned it around the second game. Through good
fielding and strong hitting the ladies came out on top. The final score
was 19-4.
Graduation plans
The Senior Class voted to decide which juniors would lead them in at
their graduation and pass out programs at the gate of Cardinal Field May
19.
Senior Class President Sarah Koehler and Secretary Kelly Wilson waited
a few days to give every senior a chance to cast their vote before they
counted them. Juniors Audrey Bjornstad and Matt Renk were voted as the
escorts. Juniors Renee Post and Tony Dopita were voted to hand out programs
for graduation.
"It really wasn't that big of a deal to me," Dopita said.
Senior Kelly Wilson was tentatively chosen as this year's Valedictorian
and the Salutatorian was still undecided at press time.
