Eighty-one Students Make the Grade for the Honor Rolls

Eighty-one students have been named to the second quarter honor rolls.Twelve seniors have been named to the Administrator's Honor Roll. Students must maintain a 4.0-3.75 GPA in order to be eligible for the Administrator's Honor Roll. Seniors: Amber Burton, Hannah Diebert, Kyle Dreher, Cole Fredrickson, Jared Ganoug, Ashlee Grover, Melissa Hageman, Cara Hansen, Sarah Koehler, Hollie Marquess, Matthew Rodriguez, and Kelly Wilsom. Juniors: Rhiannon Becker, Lacey Brin, Shanna Fellhoelter, Kayla Fisher, Christopher Fogle, Libby Hrabe, Danielle Kenney, Michael Langholz, Abby Morris, Chris Peavey, and Heather Plante. Sophomores: Wayne Cook, Mandy Cox, Carissa Fredrickson, Lolly Garvin, Willie Ruder, Abby Stagner, Naomi Thompson, Leslie Tipton, and Ryan Williams. Freshmen: Jessica Casey, Aryn Garvin, and Alex Smetana.

Twenty-three students were named to the Regular Honor Roll. Students had to maintain a 3.74-3.33 GPA in order to be eligible for the Regular Honor Roll. Seniors: Heath Albert, Matt Axelson, Stephanie Fellhoelter, Adam Glendening, and Andrew Simon. Juniors: Audrey Bjornstad, Janell Darnell, Stacy Dreher, Cody Pfaff, Renee Post, Matt Renk, Ashleigh Turnbull, and Katie Weigel. Sophmores: Danielle Moos, Jason Rath and Jamie Stahl. Freshmen: Amanda Fogle, Dustin Kraft, Laura Lacy, Amy Ledbetter, Ryan Lovelady, Makenzi Rempe, and Kelsey Ross.

Seniors: Alan Austin, Justin Balthazor, Danielle Meitler, and Tyler Plante. Juniors: Jennifer Bland Mandy Kraushaar, Jason Lindsey, Bryce McDowell, Michelle Rath, Asia Schonthaler, and T.J. Staab. Sophomores: Ashley Becker, Jessica Eisiminger, Tierra Fuzzel, Lacey Hamblet, Jamie Marcotte, and Cole Nicholas. Freshmen: Craig Baldwin, Jordan Finnesy, Matt McCune, Amy Normandin, Michelle Reishus, and Jordyn Wilkens.

Students Receive Awards at Assembly

The teachers provided an entertaining assembly on Friday, December 22 in the auditorium. Principal Roger Morris presented a number of students with awards for outstanding achievement on the Kansas State Assessment Tests. They also performed a Christmas skit complete with elves and Santa Claus. The teachers also provided doughnuts and pop after the assembly.

Santa presented certificates for eight categories based on a certain characteristic that a student displayed. The teachers nominated a student for each category. The winners include Ben Ruder with the brightest smile; Craig Baldwin with the best attitude; Mandy Cox, Aryn Garvin, Hollie Marquess, Josh Parson, and Tyler Plante were the hardest workers; Rhiannon Becker and Heather Hrabe tied for the friendliest student; Heather Plante had the most school spirit; Adam Glendening, Sarah Koehler, and Jason Stahl received the sportsmanship award; Matthew Rodriguez was voted most respectful; and the all around award went to Hannah Deibert and Ryan Williams.

January Boosters

Seniors Ashlee Grover and Alan Austin were chosen as the January Boosters.

Grover has been involved in volleyball, basketball, and NHS. Her favorite movies are The Shawshank Redemption and October Sky. Her favorite song is "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. Grover's favorite food is Chinese food. She plans to attend college and earn a degree in physical therapy or sports medicine. In her spare time, Grover enjoys playing sports and hanging out with her friends.

Austin has been involved in football and FFA. His favorite movie is Lake Placid and his favorite song is "Kryptonite" by Three Doors Down. His favorite food is steak and mashed potatoes and gravy. Austin plans to be a diesel mechanic. He likes to work, ride motorcycles, and hunt in his spare time.

Plainville FCCLA hosts STAR Events

The Plainville High School FCCLA will be holding the annual STAR Events competition on February 7. STAR Events are held for students taking action for recognition.

This year juniors Katrina Jones, Danielle Kenney, and Stacy Dreher are participating in Focus On Children. Junior Rhiannon Becker will be involved in the Creed Contest.

Sophmores Carrissa Fredrickson, Abby Stagner, and Lolly Garvin are competing in the division of Senior Skills For Life and freshmen Jessica Casey and Laura Lacy are competing in the junior division.

Two individuals are participating in the Illustrated Talk category. Junior Kayla Fisher is in the senior division and freshman Jorydn Wilkens is in the junior division.

Several members will be competing in Par Law. They include senior Sarah Koehler, senior Cara Hansen, sophomore Lacey Hamblet, senior Lindsey Hamblet, senior Danielle Meitler, and junior Katie Weigel.

Forensics Ready

The forensics team will attend their first tournament of the year at Hill City on February 3.

Returning members on the team include senior Lindsey Hamblet, and juniors Kayla Fisher, Chris Peavey, and Jolene Eilers. New members joining the team are senior Chantan Reif, junior Katie Weigel, and sophmores Jessie Eisiminger, Carissa Fredrickson, and Mandy Cox.

This year the team will be coached by Amy Krob. In years past Deb Turnbull has been the coach.

Krob said, "I think that the returning members of the team should have some success this year, but it's definitely a year of transitions. They have to adjust to a new coach and new team members. This is a young team without a great amount of experience, so I think that it might take some time for the new members to feel comfortable and to be able to perform to the best of their ability."

The newspaper staff asked PHS students what they thought nictitate means, and the following are some of their responses.

Nictitate means to flirt by winking the eye.

Winter Glacade Plans Being Made

FCCLA and Stuco are making final arrangements for Winter Glacade. The dance will be held February 10 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Winter Glacade candidates will be presented and the king and queen will be crowned on February 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The public is welcome to attend.

The theme is "Smile and Remember" and the song is "Champaign High" by Sister Hazel. The junior attendants are Brianna Casey and Cade Megaffin. FCCLA chose a sky scene with a huge silver crescent moon and stars on a dark purple background which will be the backdrop for the pictures.

"I think the planning for Winter Glacade is going really well. It's been kind of hard to plan things since we haven't had a date set for the crowning ceremony because of athletic conflicts, but I think it'll go really well. Everyone's ready to have a good time," FCCLA President Sarah Koehler said.

Band Concert Planned

The Plainville High School concert band will perform a concert Tuesday January 30, 2001.

The concert band will be performing "Southern Star," "Jingle Bells in Dixie," "Danny Boy," and "Where the Black Hawk Soars."

The Jazz band will also perform the same night. They will perform the following selections: "Flashdance....What a Feeling," "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue," " Sunrise, Sunset," and "Crocodile Rock" all arranged by Jerry Nowak.

Stuco Buys Shirts

Plainville Stuco members received shirts to wear to represent their group. Each member was given a choice of a T-shirt, a long sleeved shirt, or a sweatshirt. The shirts were paid for with extra money that Stuco had. The Stuco officers chose the design and style.

"We've been busy organizing our duties of Winter Glacade and trying to have a speaker come to our school," President Kelly Wilson said.

Stuco has been busy planning upcoming events including lining up a disk jockey for Winter Glacade and arranging for a speaker to come to Plainville High School.

FFA Attends Stock Show

FFA sent four members to the North Western Stock show in Denver on January 12, 13, and 14. The members left Friday January 12, and returned Sunday, January 14.

The members viewed the many different displays of stock on Saturday. Saturday morning the members attended a solar and wind energy workshop. There were also many companies, such as Chevrolet, that had products on display. Saturday's activities concluded with the PRCA Rodeo on Saturday night. The FFA stayed at the American Motel in Wheatridge, Colorado.

The members that went included seniors Tyler Plante, Jason Stahl, and Auldin Morris. Also attending was junior Mike Langholz and adviser Ed Rath.

"Each of the four FFA members may have ahd a different area of special interest, but my observation was their consumption of food," Rath said, "Langholz and Morris enjoyed the Rodeo, Plante was obsessed with the Casa Bonita restaurant, and Stahl took special interest in the cultural music on 107.5."

Cards Defeat the Stockton Tigers with a Score of 49-46

The Cardinals were victorious over the Stockton Tigers with a score of 49-46 on January 6.

The Cardinals led at the end of the first quarter with a score of 18-10. At the half, the Cardinals were still on top with a score of 31-26.

The Cardinals came out for the second half fired up and ready to win. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 37-35. The Tigers tried to bring the Cardinals down, but we stayed in the game and played aggressively.

In the middle of the fourth quarter, the Tigers drove ahead of the Cardinals by three points. With little time left, senior Adam Glendening brought the game to a tie with a three point shot, which gave him a total of 5 points. Junior Matt Renk recovered a turnover by the Tigers and drove down the court. He made a three point shot just as the buzzer sounded to end the game. Renk scored a total of 16 points.

Other scorers include Tony Dopita with 4 points; Matthew Rodriguez had 4 points; Ryan Williams had 2 points; Brian Deutscher scored 12 points; Andrew Simon had 2 points; and Joel Hrabe had 4 points.

Ladies Defeat Tigers

The Plainville Lady Cards won their first game of the season on January 12 at home against the Stockton Tigers.

The Cards came out strong in the first quarter leading the Tigers 8-2. As the second quarter progressed, the Lady Cards were still ahead 20-15. After half-time the girls continued to hustle and kept a lead of 33-27 in the third quarter. As the final quarter arrived, the Tigers did not give up. The lead continued to go back and forth. In the last few seconds of the game, the Lady Cards pulled away with a win of 44-42.

Scoring for the Lady Cards were senior Sarah Koehler (17), junior Libby Hrabe (11), senior Cara Hansen (5), junior Shanna Fellhoelter (4), senior Ashlee Grover (3), junior Heather Plante (2), and junior Lacey Brin (2).

The Lady Cards record is now 1-12.

Coach Norma Finnesy said, "The Lady Cards went out and played well, didn't turn the ball over much and had fun. It felt good that the girls were happy to get the pressure off themselves and come out with a win. We just need to get better every game and learn to take some pressure."

Grapplers Defeat Hill City, 42-18

The Cardinal wrestlers defeated Hill City 42-18, but came up short against Phillipsburg 24-51, on January 11.

Against Phillipsburg, freshman Adam Meyers (103) lost by a pin. Junior Luke Wise (135) won by a pin. Sophomore Jason Rath (140) lost by a decision. Senior Cole Fredrickson (145) won by a pin. Junior Cody Pfaff (160) and freshman Alex Smetana (171) both lost by a decision. Senior Jason Stahl (189) and junior T.J. Staab (215) both pinned their opponents. The final score was Plainville 24, Phillipsburg 51.

In their second dual against Hill City, freshman Adam Meyers (103) won by a forfeit. Junior Luke Wise (135) won by a pin. Sophomore Jason Rath (140) and senior Cole Fredrickson (145) both won by forfeits. Junior Cody Pfaff (160) lost by a pin. Freshman Alex Smetana (171) and senior Jason Stahl (189) both won by forfeits. Junior T.J. Staab (215) won by a pin. The team score was Plainville 42, Hill City 18.

"We were shorthanded with 6 open weights. The team wrestled well, winning 4 out of the 8 matches actually wrestled," Coach Fredrickson said.
