Six Students Attend Anti-Smoking STAR Rally in Colby

Six students attended STAR Rally in Colby on February 7. STAR stands for SmokeFree Teens Are Rising.

There were approximately 100-125 students attending this event. STAR Rally was created to raise awareness about tobacco issues. It also promotes tabacco-use prvention statewide. STAR Rally also shows students how to get involved in their comunities. The event was divided into three sessions and one guest speaker.

The first session was a video on how a bill becomes a law. The video showed all the steps it takes to get the bill to the president. The second session was a more relaxing time. The students colored posters and fshed for pennies. The third session taught about event planning. The students took notes about planning an event and how to present information. Finally, the students had a quest speaker. Don Young gave a long speech through a mechanical voice box. He talked about his life and what other cancer patients went through. Young has had a larynjectomy because of throat cancer due to tabacco use.

"My favorite thing about Star Rally was talking to the quest speaker. I think he gave a very good speach," Jamie Stahl said.

The students attending were freshman Jassica Casey and Aryn Garvin, sophomores Jessica Eisiminger and Ryan Williams and juniors Chris Peavey and Jamie Stahl.

FFA Celebrates National FFA Week

National FFA week was held February 18-23. FFA had different activities planned for each of the days. The activities were limited due to a three day school week.

Tuesday was backwards day where all participants wore thier cloths to school backwards. Wednesday was cowboy day, and all the students dressed up like western cowboys. Thursday ended the week with sports fan day. The students were asked to wear their favorite team colors. There was also a parents' appreaciation dinner Tuesday night and a teacher breakfast Wednesday morning.

The winner of the daily participation contest were Jolene Eilers on Tuesday, Mike Langholz onWednesday, and Craig Baldwin on Thursday. The parents' night went great. Almost all of the parents attended. The teacher breakfast was once again a hit. Only a few teachers did not attend.

Winter Glacade Takes Place Despite Weather

The Winter Glacade ceremony planned for February 8 was rescheduled for February 10 at 7:45 p.m. when a snow day was announced for that day.

The queen candidates were seniors Stephanie Fellhoelter, Sarah Koehler, Lindsey Hamblet, Kelly Wilson and Ashlee Grover. The king candidates were seniors Kyle Dreher, Cole Fredrickson, Jared Ganoung, Adam Glendening and Jason Stahl. Grover and Ganoung were crowned asWinter Glacade king and queen at the dance.

The dance began at 8 p.m. and ended at 11 p.m. The decorations and refreshments were provided by FCCLA. Music Video To Go provided the music and screens for the dance which was paid for by Stuco.

"It seemed like everyone was having a good time at the dance. Hopefully, we will have a home game scheduled so we can do the crowning at the game next year," FCCLA Sponsor Shari Tucker said.

History Class Views Thirteen Days

The American history class took a trip to Hays January 31. The class went to see the movie Thirteen Days. The movie gave a behind the scenes look at the Cuban Missile Crisis. The class had just finished studying the Cuban Missile Crisis. The movie pertrayed many of the facts written in the book.

"Because the movie was factual, many of the students didn't enjoy it. For those that did focus, they learned a lot," said Mrs. Harlan.

FCCLA Hosts STAR Events

Plainville High School hosted the anual STAR events competition on February 7.

Several FCCLA members from PHS participated. Juniors Katrina Jones, Danielle Kenney and Stacy Dreher participated in Focus On Children and received a silver rating. Sophomores Carissa Fredrickson, Abby Stagner and Lolly Garvin competed in the Senior Skills For Life category. They received a gold rating. They qualified for the state competition.

Junior Kayla Fisher participated in the senior division of Illustrated Talk. She received a silver rating. Senior Lindsey Ostrom participated in Job Interview and received a gold rating. She qualified for state.

Participating in Par Law were seniors Sarah Koehler, Cara Hansen, Lindsey Hamblet and Danielle Meitler and sophomore Lacy Hamblet. They received a silver rating. This group will also be represinting PHS at state.

The state competition will be held in Wichita in April. Other FCCLA members are allowed to attend along with the finalists, but a definite list of members going is unavailable.

FCCLA also attend District Elections which was held on February 21. They were located in Downs. Juniors Dreher along with sophomore Garvin ran for an FCCLA District Offoce.

February Boosters

February boosters of the month are juniors Rhiannon Becker and Cody Pfaff.

Becker is involved in tennis, cheerleading, softball, Stuco, FCCLA, Pep Club, CYO and band. Her favorite movies are 10 Things I Hate About You and Save the Last Dance. Her favorite songs are"Thank You For Loving Me" by Bon Jovi and "Arms Wide Open" by Creed. Becker's favorite food is chicken primavera. After high school she plans to attend Kansas State University, but her major is undecided. In her spare time, you can find her hanging out with friends, playing tennis or talking on the phone.

Pfaff is involved in FFA, football and wrestling and is undecided about a spring sport. His favorite movie is Dazed and Confused. His favorite songs are "Scar Tissue" by Red Hot Chili Peppers and "Higher" by Creed. His Favorite food is Chinese. After high School he plans to finish his military occupation as a heavy weight wheel mechanic and then go to college. In his spare time, you can find him restoring his 1967 Ford Mustang, water skiing, four wheeling, jet skiing, scuba diving and hanging out with freinds.

Forensics Competes at Hill City

The forensics team traveled to Hill City on February 3.

Senior Lindsey Hamblet and junior Katie Weigel performed in improvised duet acting (IDA). Hamblet and junior Jolene Eilers each performed in prose reading.

"No one made it into finals, but for Katie's very first time performing, she and Lindsey did well together," Coach Amy Krob said.

Twenty other schools attended including WaKeeney, Wheatland, Smith Center, Eastern Heights, Colby, Norton, Dighton, Ransom, Oberlin, Morland, Utica, Stockton, Thomas-Moore Prep, Quinter, Ellis, LaCrosse, Lenora, Scott City, Palco, and Logan. There were about 230 entries, but some were students who were entered in more than one event.

Two New Students Join PHS Student Body

Two new students have joined PHS from Palco High School. Nicole Kerr and Scott Jerome are both incoming freshmen.

Kerr will not be participatin in any sports or clubs this year. She enjoys watching television in her spare time.

Jerome will not be participating in sports or clubs this year. In his spare time he enjoys riding dirt bikes, playing baseball and running track.

Kerr said, "PHS was scary my first week, but then I got used to it. I like the fact that there are more students at PHS, but I dislike not being able to leave for lunch."

Jerome said, "My first week at school was fine. I have not decided on anything I like or dislike about PHS."

Both Kerr and Jerome agree PHS is much better than Palco High School.

Valentine Gifts and Wishes

The Booster Staff asked several students about what they received or what they had given for Valentines Day. They were also asked if they would change anything about their gifts. These were some of their responses:

Junior Katie Weigel said, "I gave Matt Renk a pair of boxer shorts and a card. He gave me a beautiful necklace. I wouldn't change a thing about what I received!"

Senior Hollie Marquess said, "I gave JJ Wright a DVD, CD, and a notebook. He gave me six red roses, a DVD, and a scrapbook. I am completely happy with what I received."

Senior Adam Glendening said, "I gave Terri Kenney six red roses and some candy. She gave me a balloon, some candy, and a heart-shaped pillow. I would have liked to have gotten a Jaguar!:

Sophomore Lacey Hamblet said, "I gave Tyler Nelson a Lucky T-shirt. He gave me a dozen roses and a teddy bear. I don't think I would have wanted anything different!"

Senior Jared Ganoung said, "I gave Shanna Fellhoelter a dozen roses. She gave me a fossil watch. I like what I received!"

Senior Sarah Koehler said, "I gave Brandon Gehering a CD of our songs and gave him a picture of us in a frame. He sent me roses and took me out to dinner. I would have been completely happy just getting to see my boyfriend on Valentines Day, but the snow prevented that from happening."

New NHS Members

The National Honor Society hosted their annual induction ceremony on February 5, 2001. Juniors Rhiannon Becker, Shanna Fellhoelter, and Heather Plante are the new members.

President Cole Fredrickson delivered the welcome speech. There was a pot luck dinner and candle lighting ceremony.

NHS is continuing their sucker sales. They are in the process of planning their spring trip and are thinking about an end of the year pizza party.

Grapplers Take 7th at Regionals and Four Compete at State

The Cardinal wrestling team placed seventha at the regional wrestling tournament in Ellis on February 16-17.

Junior Luke Wise (140) finished second by pinning three of his opponents and only losing one match. Senior Cole Fredrickcon (145) won four out of his five matches and came out with a third place finish. Senior Jason Stahl (189) defeated all of his opponents and brought home a first place finish. Junior TJ Staab (215) also ended up in first by defesating each of his opponents.

There were also four other grapplers in the tournament. Freshman Adam Meyers (103) won one out of this tree matches. Sophomore Jason Rath (152) pinned one opponent but came up short against the other two. Junior Cody Pfaff (160) lost both of his matches. Freshman Alex Smetana (171) defeated one opponent and lost to the other two.

Wise, Fredrickson, Stahl, and Staab all qualified for the State Tournament on February 23-24. Wise finished third, Fredrickson finished 3rd, Stahl finished 4th, and Staab finished 2nd.

Ladies Keep it Competitive Against Victoria

The PHS Lady Cards basketball team hosted the Victoria Knights on February 16. This game was also senior night. Seniors being honored included Kelly Wilson, Sarah Koehler, Cara Hansen, and Ashlee Grover.

In the first quarter Victoria took the lead with a score of 12-21. By half-time Victoria was still leading 19-46. As the game progressed, Victoria never gave up the lead. by the third quarter, the score was 33-46. Just when the Cards were closing the gap, the Knights pulled farther ahead. The final score of the game was 44-68.

Scoring for the Lady Cards were junior Shanna Fellhoelter 6, Wilson 2, Koehler 8, junior Lacey Brin 10, Hansen 4, Grover 6, and junior Libby Hrabe 8.

Cagers Drop a Close Victoria Game

Senior night for basketball was held on February 16. The Plainville Cardinals took on the Victoria Knights. The Cardinals were defeated with a close score of 53-61.

"I felt that er had a letdown in the first half that really jurt us. We just never really got it together for long enought to get back. We did make the game exciting in the end," senior Matthew Rodriquez said.

The high scorer for the game was junior Matt Renk with 22 points. Other scorers included senior Brian Deutsher with 8 points, Rodriguez had 7 points, senior Adam Glendening had 6 points, senior Andrew Simon and freshman Joel Hrabe both had 4 points and junior Tony Dopita had 2 points.
