Band Performs Last Concert
Under the Direction of Bill Schick
The high school band performed their last
concert on May 9.
Songs performed by the Concert Band included
"On Wings of Eagles" by Ed Huckley, "The Lion King Soundtrack
Highlights" arranged by Calvin Custer, and "Morning Maddness"
by Larry Clark.
Songs performed by the Jazz Band included
"We Built This City" arranged by Jerry Nowake, "Shake,
Rattle, and Roll" by Charles Calhoun, "Ballin' the Jack"
by Chris Smith, "Hang on Sloopy" by Burt Russell, "California
Dreamin" by John Phillips, "Johnny B Goode" by Chuck Berry
and "That Old Black Magic" by Harold Arlen.
The State Ensembles and Soloists also performed.
The ensemble including junior Hannah Diebert,
senior Ashley Mick, sophomore Christopher Fogle, junior Danielle Meitler,
and sophomore Heather Ulrich performed the song "Barouque Suite No.
2" by Ronald Dishinger.
The ensemble including sophomore Rhiannon
Becker, freshman Lolly Garvin, and senior Diana Stout Performed "Divertissement"
by LeRoy Ostromsky.
Diana Stout performed the solo "Andante
and Allegro" by Robert Clerisse on trumpet. Hannah Diebert performed
the solo "Fantasy" by C.L. Harlan on saxophone.
"All of the band groups and ensembles
performed very well" band director Bill Schick said.
Vocal Concert
The Plainville choir performed it's last
concert of the year May16.
Songs performed included "Puttin on
the Ritz" by Irving Berlin, "Early One Morning" by Micheal
Larkin, "May the Music Never End" by Greg Chaplin, "I'm
Your Angel" by R. Kelly and "Steppin Out"- a medley arranged
by Mark Brymer.
Also, two ensemble songs were performed.
The song "Sunrise, Sunset" was performed by senior Rebekah Stawder,
junior Hannah Diebert, sophomore Heather Ulrich, and sophomore Janell
Darnell and the song "Sixteen Tons" was performed by junior
Auldin Morris, sophomore Chris Peavey and freshman Joe Kraushaar.
State Forensics
Junior Lindsey Hamblet and senior Diana
Stout made semifinals (top12) at the State Forensics Championship at Wichita
in the Improvised Duet Acting category, May 6.
Sophomore Chris Peavey and sophomore Kayla
Fisher placed fifth at the Hays High tournament and qualified for State
Speech and Drama Festival in Duet Acting with "Who's on First?".
At the State Forensics Festival, Peavey and Fisher rated a two with their
duet.
Stout and Hamblet placed second at the Ransom
High tournament and qualified in Improvised Duet Acting (IDA) for State
Forensics Championship.
FCCLA Awards Presented
at Banquet
The FCCLA Banquet was held on May 2 at 6:30
p.m.
Senior Diana Stout read the opening for
the ceremony. Stout also read the welcome, while Patti Stout gave the
invocation. Sophomore Katie Weigel presented the Star Events awards. Junior
Cara Hansen handed out the Power of One awards. Sophomore Rhiannon Becker
handed out the Sales Awards. Sophomore Heather Plante presented the Participation
awards. Sponsor Sherri Tucker presented the Scholarship Awards and Officer
Awards. Diana Stout read the thank you. Junior Lindsey Ostrom talked about
the highlights of the FCCLA year with a slide presentation. Junior Sarah
Koehler read the closing ceremony.
The 1999-2000 Executive Council included
President-Stout, Vice President of Membership-Fellhoelter, Secretary-Koehler,
Vice President of Finance-Becker, Vice President of Programs-Weigel, Vice
President of Recognition-Hansen, District B Represitive-Ostrom, Advisor-Sherri

The 2000-2001 Executive Council includes

Top sellers included sophomore Katrina Jones-first
place, sophomore Michelle Rath- second place, and sophomore Janell Darnell-
third place.
Star Events awards included Hansen, Koehler,
and Plante who received 2 Star in district level Applied Technology (senior
division). Junior Lindsey Hamblet and Stout received 3 Star in district
level(first place) and 2 Star at state level in Senior Chapter Showcase
Manual. Freshman Lolly Garvin, Lacey Hamblet, and Danielle Moos received
3 Star in district level (first place);and a 2 star at state level in
Junior Focus on Children. Eilers received 3 Star in district level (first
place) and 2 Star at state level in Senior Illustrated Talk. Senior Tracy
Hrabe and Weigel 3 star in district level in Interpersonal Communications.
Ostrom 3 Star in district level (first place) and 2 Star in state level.
Sophomore Jennifer Bland, Dreher, and Fisher received 2 Star at district
level.
"The experience was very fun and educational,"
Rath said.
May Boosters
The Boosters for the month of May are seniors
Andrew Benedick and Emily Hrabe.
Benedick likes to get close to God in his
spare time and eat his favorite food is pizza. His favorite movie is Varsity
Blues and his favorite song is "Ocean" by Led Zeppelin.
He has been involved in football, wrestling, track, baseball, Pep-Club,
and FFA.
Hrabe enjoy's riding around and spending
time with Devin and Jeremiah. Her favorite movie is The Horse Whisperer
and her favorite song is "Buy Me A Rose" by Kenny Rogers. Her
favorite food is Taco Express. She has been involved in basketball, cross-country,
track, Pep-Club, and FFA.
Four Journalism Students
Compete at State
Senior Randi Meitler received an honorable
mention in the category of yearbook photography at state journalism contest
at KU May 6.
Two other students also traveled to KU to
compete. Senior Tammy Gerhardt competed in newspaper sports writing and
junior Danielle Meitler competed in advertising. Senior Coddy Whisman
did not travel with them, but did compete in advertising.
"It was an honor to have placed among
the number of students participating in the contest. I was really shocked
when I found out that I had qualified," Gerhardt said.
Awards and Officers Installed
at FFA Banquet
The FFA Banquet was held May 6 in the Grade
School Cafeteria.
The parents cooked the meal for the 54 people
that came. Rachel Spencer spoke on challenging your potential.
The four greenhand awards were given out
to freshman Chris Hair, sophomore Chris Fogle, junior Tyler Plante, and
freshman Jason Rath. The following received awards: senior Andrew Benedick-
outstanding leadership, Hair- outstanding greenhand and Rath- outstanding
livestock judger and top salesman. Randy Hrabe presented certificates
from Farm Bureau to the three-year members: seniors Chris Rogers, Chad
Simon, and Mark Simon.
There were three scholarships given out.
The $200 Peavey-Ott scholarship was given to M. Simon; the $100 Coast
to Coast scholarship was given to Fogle, and the $200 FFA scholarship
was given to Benedick.
The 2000-2001 officers are Plante (President),
Hair (Vice President), sophomore Josh Cunningham (Secretary), Fogle (Treasurer),
Rath (Reporter), and sophomore Matt Renk (Sentinel).
"The banquet was hectic for awhile,
but I think everyone had fun. It turned out to be really nice," President
Rusty Hockett said.
Jarod Easterberg and Caroline
Ramsay Take Top Booster Club Awards
PHS athletes attended the annual athletic
banquet on Thursday, May 11 at 6:00 p.m.
Booster Club President Charles Ramsay addressed
the crowd at 6:35.
The special guest speaker was former PHS
football coach Larry Friend.
Special awards were also presented. Seniors
Brad Nuckols, Caroline Ramsay, and Diana Stout received the Booster Club
Awards. The Leon Bair Award was awarded to senior Jarod Easterberg. The
Bair Award is presented to the outstanding football player of the season.
Easterberg also received the Olen Smrka Outstanding Basketball Player
Award.
"I was surprised when I recieved my
awards," Easterberg said.
The Joe Mongeau Award is presented to the
outstanding senior female athlete of the year. Senior Caroline Ramsay
received this award.
"I think that the banquet went really
well this year! It was a real honor to have won my award. I was very excited
to be chosen for this award," Ramasay said.
The dinner consisted of roast beef, a'grautin
potatoes, salad, green beans, a roll, and cake.
Baseball at Beloit
The Plainville baseball team played Beloit
on May 5. They lost the first game by a score of 1-8, and lost the second
game by a score of 0-10.
The batting stats for the first game are
Dreher 2-2, Ganoung 0-3, Deutscher 1-3, Brown0-3, Bird 0-3, Benedick 1-3,
Wise 1-2, Nelson 0-3, and Ruder 0-3. The batting stats for the second
game are Dreher 0-1, Ganoung 0-2 Deutscher 0-2, Kraushaar 0-1, Brown 0-1,
Hair 1-2, Bird 0-1, Benedick 0-2, Wise 0-1, Nelson 1-1 and Cook 0-1.
Pitching stats for both games are Deutscher
with six hits, five strike outs and 3 walks; Ganoung had four hits, two
strike outs and one walk; Dreher had four hits; and Bird had one hit,
one strike out and four walks.
Close One at Beloit
The Plainville Cardinal Softball team went
to Beloit on May 5.
The first game ended in a score of 0-10.
Plainville scored no runs.
The second game ended in a score of 10-11.
In the first inning, juniors Kelcee Lowry and Melissa Hageman scored.
In the second inning, freshman Tesha Florian scored. In the third inning,
senior Jessi Young, Lowry, Hageman, freshman Jamie Stahl and Florian scored.
In the fifth inning, Lowry scored.
The girls went to Lincoln on May 15 for
regionals. No results were available at press time.
New Cheerleaders Chosen
for 2000-2001
The new cheerleaders for the 2000-2001 year
are eighth graders Jordan Finnesy and Julie Hrabe; freshman Naomi Thompson;
and sophomores Jennifer Bland, Janell Darnell, and Katrina Jones; and
junior Danielle Meitler.
The returning cheerleaders for the 2000-2001
school year are freshmen Danielle Moos, Lacey Hamblet, and Heather Hrabe;
and sophomores Rhiannon Becker and Heather Plante.
Cheerleader tryouts were held March 24 at
5 p.m. in the Plainville High School gym.
"It is an honor to be cheerleader,"
Meitler said.
Individual Events Place
Well at MCL
Three Cardinal events place at the MCL Track
Meet in Smith Center on May 12. They included sophomore T.J. Staab in
the shot put (3rd), freshman Jason Rath in the pole vault (5th) and the
girls 400 meter relay (5th).
The girls running on that relay included
freshmen Danielle Moos and Lacey Hamblet, sophomore Stacy Dreher, and
junior Sarah Koehler. They finished with a time of 54.41.
Staab threw the shot put 47'1" and
the discus 127'0". Junior Jason Stahl threw the shot put 37'4 3/4".
"I met my goal in discus, but in shot
put I haven't yet," Stahl said.
Koehler jumped 14'3 3/4" in the long
jump. She ran the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.57 and the 200 meter
dash with a time of 27.89. Dreher competed in the long jump with a jump
of 14'2 1/2".
Junior Matthew Rodriguez long jumped 16'11
1/2". Freshman Jason Rath pole vaulted 10'6". He ran the 100
meter hurdles in 17.17 seconds.l Moos ran the 100 meter dash with a time
of 13.98. Sophomore Kayla Fisher ran the 100 meter dash in 14.88 seconds.
Hamblet ran the 200 meter dash in 29.76 seconds. Freshman Ryan Williams
ran the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.10.
"I have met my goals this season. I
have wanted to get a medal and place at least once, and I did," freshman
Mandy Cox said.
The Cardinals competed at the 2A regional
meet on May 19. Results were not available at press time. State competition
will be held May 26-27.
Cardinal Golfers Place
at Regionals
The Regional Championships for golf were
held at Ellis, May 15.
The Plainville golf team placed seventh
in the tournament.
Individual scores were as follows: senior
Shawn Frederking-95, junior Byron Knight-95, junior Adam Glendening-109,
sophomore Tony Dopita-99, junior Stephanie Fellhoelter-97, and sophomore
Jason Lindsey-127.
"The team did very well in this tournament,"
Coach Jeremy Krob said.
Dance Team Line Up Set
for Next Year
The new Cardinal Dance Team consists of
three juniors, five sophomores, three freshmen, and one eighth grader.
The 2000-2001 Dance Team includes junior
Cara Hansen (Captain); juniors Hollie Marquess and Stephanie Fellhoelter;
sophomores Stacey Dreher, Audrey Bjornstad, Shanna Fellhoelter, and Renee
Post; freshmen Jessica Eisiminger, Leslie Tipton, and Jamie Stahl and
eighth grader Michelle Reishus. The new members are Bjornstad, Tipton,
Stahl, and Reishus.
"I think this year will be very exciting.
The girls who've been on the team before are helping us out a lot. I think
we will have a lot of fun," freshman Leslie Tipton said.
The team will attend camp at Emporia State
University June 15 through the 18.
"The squad is going to be fantastic.
We have a lot of girls with dance experience, and they have already impressed
me at practice with the talent they all have. The team should have a fun
year performing," Sponsor Bill Schick said.
