Teachers Find Relaxation and Enjoyment in Their Hobbies

Teachers lives do not end with the school day. They enjoy hobbies and past times that do not necessarily include school activities.

FACS Teacher Sherry Tucker enjoys hobbies like making craft items with cloth or wood. She has been making crafts since high school. She likes to sew and to make homemade gifts so she began making items for herself and her friends. She said she likes to work on craft shows, and she said the amount of time she spends on her hobbies depends on how much spare time she has.

English and Journalism Teacher Dale Sims loves to ride his motorcycle, especially traveling. He has been riding for nine years.

"I grew up around motorcycles and have always loved riding. When I found myself with the freedom to ride and a riding partner (former High School Principal Dennis Stout), I decided to get involved," Sims said.

Sims said riding is his way of relaxing and rejuvenating. He spends much of his free time riding. He goes to Colorado to see family members and his family likes to ride motorcycles, too. He drives an average of 15,000 miles per year.

English Teacher Amy Krob's hobbies are reading, writing, sewing. making crafts, shopping and collecting Beanie Babies. She has been doing all her hobbies except collecting Beanie Babies since she can remember. Collecting Beanie Babies is a pretty recent hobby. She got her interest in reading and writing from her mom. Her mom taught her how to sew, and both her parents read to her until she learned how to read. Krob likes to do her hobbies as often as possible.

"When I'm not doing school work or cleaning house, I am reading. The great part of my job is that it includes doing what I enjoy," Krob said.

February Boosters

The Boosters for February are juniors Brian Deutscher and Stephanie Fellhoelter.

Deutscher has been involved in basketball, golf and baseball. His favorite movie is The Matrix and his favorite song is "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. Deutscher's favorite food is Italian subs and pizza. In his spare time, you can find him playing basketball. Deutscher's most memorable moment at PHS was watching the Freshman at initiation.

Fellhoelter has been involved in dance team, FCCLA, FCCLA Vice-President of Membership, Stuco, Pep Club, volleyball, golf, CYO and CYO Secretary. Her favorite movie is Ghost and her favorite song is "My Best Friend" by Tim McGraw In her spare time, she hangs out with her friends, cruises and watches movies. Felloelter's most memorable moment at PHS was marching in the Citrus Bowl Parade and going to Applebee's with Matt Axelson, Amber Burton, and Matthew Rodriguez.

Movies: Stewart Little

Stewart Little is a story about a family, the Littles, who wants to adopt a child, but they soon find it hard to decide which one they really want. Then they come upon a little mouse, Stewart, who could talk and dance, and they instantly fell in love. They realize that this was the child they have been looking for.

Now Stewart does not like this idea at first, but the idea soon grows on him and everyone else. Before long Stewart was one of the family.

The movie Stewart Little was a story that was a story that was more for lids, and I would recommend it for your younger brother and sister.

FFA hosts FFA Week

The Plainville FFA Chapter was busy planning events for FFA week that was Feb. 20-26.

On Tuesday night, they had a parents night. The parents of members were invited to come eat and play games in the Ag room. On Wednesday, they had a breakfast for the teachers. If began at 7 a.m. They served pancakes, sausage, bacon and many other things. Wednesday was FFA color day. Everyone was encouraged to wear blue and gold. Thursday will be hat day. There wasn't anything Friday due to no school.

"I think FFA week will go good. It should come out pretty nice," President Rusty Hockett said.

I recommend this book to people who like science fiction.

What's It mean?

The Booster staff asked several students what they thought wanderoo means. The following are their responses:

Senior Nicole Hammerschmidt- A baby wallaby

Senior Bobbi Dopita- A monkey that wanders around the zoo

Junior Heath Albert- A lost kangaroo

Junior Chantan Reif- Um, let's see its a wand that bounces around like a kangaroo

Sophomore Emerson Owings- To bleach

Sophomore Rhiannon Becker- A cow that makes a wonderful moo

Freshmen Michelle Rath- A place where people go to wander about something

Freshmen Mandy Cox- Some kind of funky looking Big Bird

Wanderoo means a monkey with a purple face.

A Look at Your Valentine's Day

The newspaper staff asked some students a few questions about Valentine's Day. The first question was what they wanted this year for Valentine's Day and the second question was their most memorable Valentine's Day.

Senior Bobbi Dopita- A big teddy bear, a box of chocolates and some roses.

Senior Molly Becker- My boyfriend. 8th grade Valentine's dance.

Sophomore Libby Hrabe- Nothing.

Deb Turnbull- A card. I don't have a certain memorable Valentine's Day. Every year I make my family heart muffins for breakfast. Then we try to have dinner together, and I make heart pizza and heart dessert.

Senior Chris Rogers- Nothing. Last year. It was the first year I ever got anything. I received a teddy bear with six roses from Coddy.

Senior Jeremiah Brown- Something from the heart. When my front wheel bearing locked up going across the Saline River bridge.

Students and Their Jobs

Many high school students juggle their academics and an after-school job. The newspaper staff asked some High schools students and teachers if they feel this would affect their grades.

English teacher Amy Krob said, "If the student is responsible, there usually isn't a problem. It doesn't seem to conflict with school anymore than athletics, unless students work unusually long hours."

The grades of the students who have recently got a job may drop a little, but if they are serious about their future and keep up on what goes on in school, they should be able to keep their grades at a steady average. If a student is responsible, they should be able to maintain both school and a job.

Senior Randi Meitler said, "An after-school job should not affect the students grad, because it teaches them more about responsibilities."

Long hours may affect the student's personality and his ability to stay awake during class. If this becomes a problem the student should talk to his boss and try to arrange a more flexible schedule. The he can concentrate on his academics and rest.

Social Studies teacher Roger Hrabe said,"I can tell if a student has an after-school job mostly if I see them or they tell me. The grade may be effected in some cases where they work late or have too many hours. But mostly it is up to the individual and their study habit whether it makes a difference or not."

THE BIG SQUEEZE OF A STUDENT'S DAY

The newspaper staff decided to see what it was like being a student of Plainville High School. We followed Senior Ashley Mick around for a day and came up with the following:

6:00 a.m.- My alarm clock is buzzing. I drag myself up out of bed and to the shower I go. On a good day, I get to eat breakfast; that rarely happens though. I usually just bring a snack to school to eat.

7:00 a.m.- I am dressed and out of my house on my way to drill team practice.

7:15 a.m.- I'm up shaking my body, learning a new dance for the half-time performance.

8:00 a.m.- I have a few minutes after drill team practice to get myself organized and chat with my friends before the bell rings to go to first hour English class.

8:10 a.m.- 11:47 a.m.- Government, Photography, the Band. By then I'm starving and ready to go to lunch.

Lunch- It's there and gone in a flash.

12:33 p.m.- Good thing I have Creative Cuisine's 6th hour because I am usually still hungry. I can chow in there.

1:28 p.m.- 3:15 p.m.- Art and Multimedia Technology fly by, and at 3:15 p.m. I can jump in my car and cruise home. After school I am usually really bored. I just sleep or watch TV.

Evening - I might take a trip to Hays to eat or go shopping. If not, I just cruise around town or sit at home-nothing too exciting.

10:00 p.m.- I hit the sack.

Lady Cards squeak by Goldbugs

The Lady Cards played an exciting game against the Kensington Goldbugs on Feb. 8 winning 55-54.

Plainville got off to a good start and were ahead 19-10 at the end of the first quarter. Missed free thrown in the second quarter gave Kensington a chance to get back into the game. The score at half-time was 28-23. The Lady Cards came out a little slow in the third quarter and only scored two points to Kensington's 10. The fourth quarter proved to be an exciting one. The score kept going back and forth, but a couple of made free thrown tied up the game. The game went into overtime, but Plainville made the winning shot with only a few seconds left. Plainville outscored Kensington by only one point in overtime.

Scorers for the game were Rebecca Siefers-11, Sarah Koehler-4, Caroline Ramsay-9, Martha Hammerschmidt-4, Diana Stout- 2, and Emily Hrabe-25. The top scorers for Kensington were Hofer-17 and Nech-12.

"We really pulled together against Kensington. We have been playing well these past few games. Everyone is having more fun and we are finally playing as a team. Since we beat Victoria, we are seated 4th in sub-state." Siefers said.

Cagers Win a Close One against the Goldbugs

The men's Cardinal basketball team defeated the Kensington Goldbugs 60-58 on February 8. The Winter Glacade royalty was crowned during half-time of this game, with seniors Dane Ganoung and April Ganoung receiving king and queen honors.

Leading scorers for the Cardinals were senior Jarod Easterburg with 15; Senior Dusty Pfannenstiel with 14; Ganoung with 12; senior Shawn Frederking with 8; junior Matthew Rodriguez with 7; senior Jeremiah Brown with 2; and junior Brian Deutscher with 2.

"I think that the season is going all right but it would be better if every player on the floor got the ball more frequently," Brown said.

The Junior Varsity team lost to the Goldbugs 33-34. Freshman Ryan Williams led the Cardinal scorers with 9 points. Junior Adam Glendening followed with 8 points, sophomore Tony Dopita with 6 points, and sophomore Jason Lindsey with 4 points. Junior Deutscher, sophomore Matt Renk, and freshman Chris Hair each scored 2 points.

Grapplers Trounce Trego and Stockton

The Cardinal wrestlers defeated both Trego and Stockton on February 11 by scores of 46-15 and 46-21, respectively.

Against Trego, senior Rance Becker (125) won by a forfeit. Senior Shane Bird (130) won by a technical pin. Freshman Scott Wise (135) lost by a pin. "This year we have all wrestled pretty well. Nothing could make this season any better. The worst thing that has happened to the team is that a lot of people are getting injured," Nuckols said.

Freshman Jason Rath competed at the Colby Junior Varsity Tournament on February 12. He pinned all of his opponents and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

The Super Bowl and Its Commercials: Your Opinions

The Booster staff asked students what their opinion was of the Super Bowl and what their favorite commercial was. The following are their answers:
Senior Bill Van Dyke
It was exciting and better than some in the last few years.
The Mountain Dew commercial, where the guy is on the mountain bike and catches the cheetah.
Senior Rebecca Siefers
I thought that it was one of the most exciting Super Bowl games that I've seen. The second half was very exciting.
My favorite commercial was probably the commercial for the Oldsmobile Alero.
Junior Matt Axelson
I wish that the Titans would have won.
I liked the one where the guy chased down the cheetah with his bicycle to get his 7-Up can.
Juniors Hannah Deibert, Stephanie Fellhoelter, Cara Hansen, and Kelly Wilson
The fourth quarter was exciting. The half-time show was the worst we've ever seen.
The cats, Wizard of Oz-Fed Ex and the snake commercials.
Sophomore Mike Langholz
The Rams went all the way, but I wish that the Titans would have gotten the seven points to tie it so it would be the first Super Bowl ever to go into overtime.
The one where the dog is running after a truck and jumps over the fence and hits his head on the van and starts to howl.
Freshman Jason Rath
The Titans should have won.
My favorite commercial was probably the one with the cowboys herding the cats.
