Metallica recently joined with the San Francisco Symphony to create Metallica S&M (San Francisco Symphony and Metallica). The resulting effect was sublime. It combined the grandeur orchestration of the symphony and the alternative rock styles of the well-known Metallica in a total of twenty-one remastered songs.

In this album you will find the son titles such as "Master of Puppets," "No Leaf Clover," "Hero of the Day," "Nothing Else Matters," "Until it Sleeps," "Whenever I May Roam," "One" and "Enter Sandman."

This album definitely makes it on my list for best of the millennium.

A review of Lasher by Anne Rice
By Rebecca Masters

Lasher by Anne Rice is a captivating novel about an ancient family of witches (the Mayfairs) and a spirit (Lasher) that has been with them since the family was founded.

The Mayfair family is a family of inbreeds. Rarely is new blood introduced into their lives. Almost all of the women in the family are witches and the ones with the most inbred lines are the strongest witches. It is found that those witches have an extra set of chromosomes which have remained dormant for centuries until Lasher finds that if two Mayfairs with the right genetics mate and of their union an infant is formed, that he can merge with the infant's body before its soul takes over and join the living souls. He gets his chance to live when the heiress of the family legacy (Rowan Mayfair)and her husband Michael Curry, who is also a descendant of the Mayfairs unite.

Lasher however is not a normal spirit. He is what is known in ancient Scotland as a Taltos. Taltos are a type of mammal not like humans. Their growth rates and mental capacities greatly exceeds that of a human. They are completely formed in the womb and when they are born the know everything that their parents knew.

Lasher kidnap Rowan and knowing that she can produce Taltos, tries to breed with her. His mind is set on spawning a new race that will overcome humankind and rule the world.

If you want to know if he is successful in his plan read Lasher by Anne Rice.

Band Director Bill Schick moves on after Two Decades at PHS

Band director Bill Schick came to Plainville in 1979 and this was his first job. He came to Plainville after graduating from Barton County Community College with his Associates of Arts Degree and then from Fort Hays University with his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees.

The high school band was around 60 to 70 students. When he was in high school, Plainville had a eruption of having an excellent band, and when the band position became open, he wanted to apply.

From the first Florida trip, marching in the parade was the most memorable. The cheers and the applause and the band performing at their best was rewarding. Also, watching the kids at he amusement parks rewarded him.

From the second trip, listening to the band on the cell phone was the most memorable. This was the best the band had sounded.

He enjoyed and remembered all the concerts and half-time shows. The band had some really outstanding performances. He will remember attending all the various honor bands and contests watching and listening to the students succeed. Some of his favorite times had been in the classroom when we would do a particular song right for the first time. When it gets close to concert time and the students play through the music without having to stop very often and he can listen to the sounds the band is making, that is a lot of fun. Another proud accomplishment is the band receiving I ratings at he State Fair for 14 consecutive years.

The challenges he faced was learning what the capabilities of each class of students were and what they were capable of. The second was learning how the motivate students to want to succeed and be the best. The third and final challenge was learning how to pace the band in rehearsals and plan so the band would be at its best at concerts.

Schick has accepted a position at Phillipsburg as a high school and junior high band instructor.

According to Schick, Phillipsburg has some very fine musicians, and he looks forward to continuing the traditions they have established and starting new ones. They have not done very much marching in the past so this is one thing we will begin working on. They also do not have a jazz band so this is something else he will start.

"Always believe and have confidence in your abilities. Never believe that something is impossible. Success does not come easy. It will take a lot of hard work and also have some failures to ultimately achieve what you first set out o do. Dreams can come true. The students and a lot of my dreams come true, and I hope that in a way I have helped to make the music dreams of some of my students come true," Schick said.
