USD 270 sponsors annual holiday meal and program
USD 270 hosted the Significant Senior Citizen's
Dinner, December 8, 2004. This year the district charged $2.50 for the meal.
The guests started arriving at 11:45, and the meal was served by the FCCLA members.
The entertainment started at 12:30.
The program started with a welcome from the superintendent Dr. Harry Austin,
and the BOE President Darlene Jones. The invocation was given by BOE Vice President
Dr. Tom Nuckols. The meal was a traditional Christmas dinner with turkey and
dressing.
Leslie Fogle started the entertainment by playing the piano while the guests
enjoyed their meal. Then, the 7th and 8th grade girls ensemble performed. Senior
Heather Schonthaler, freshman Justin Lacy, and Colt McCune performed a portion
of the play Excerpt from Santa and Wicked Wazoo. Senior Lauren Hemphill had
a piano solo, White Christmas, by Irving Berlin. The High School Choir sang
at the Christmas Concert. Junior Caroline Hrabe and freshman Aubrey Frederking
played their flutes.
"It was fun seeing my grandparents having a good time," sophomore
Megan Plante said.
FCCLA and FFA held their annual Christmas party
on December 13 at 7:00 PM in the FACS room. The dinner consisted of a potluck
with which each class had a certain thing to bring. They also had a Chinese
gift exchange.
"The food was great and there were neat presents," senior Amanda Husmann
said.
FCCLA also held a food drive the week of November 15 through the 19. There was
a class competition to see who could bring the most items. FCCLA members received
five points for each item. The freshmen won and received a root beer float party
on Thursday, December 16 during SIP. The food collected was donated for Christmas
baskets for people who need the food.
In last month's article about the cluster delegates meeting, Brenda Koehler's
name was left off the list of sponsors.
Choirs perform Christmas vocal concert
The Junior High and High School Choirs held their
annual Christmas concert December 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Jeanette Sommer and Connie Reishus directed the choirs. Leslie Fogle and senior
Kelsey Bjornstad were accompanists.
The sixth grade chorus sang four songs including: "Celebrating Hanukkah,"
"Little Star," "I'm gonna E-Mail Santa," and "Santa's
Going on a Diet."
The seventh and eighth grade chorus sang four songs including: "Stars that
Twinkle and Shine," "Merry Christmas to Me," "A Candy Cane
Christmas," and "Santa's in the House."
The High School chorus sang eight songs including: "Sing We Now of Christmas,"
"Winter's Song" with flutists Caroline Hrabe and Aubrey Frederking,
"Ding Dong! Merrily on High," "One Small Star," "White
Christmas," "Long Ago on a Winter's Morning," and "Simple
Joy."
The High School choir members include sopranos Lauren Hemphill, Jenna Fellhoelter,
Kris Brummer, Cassie Meyers, and Terra Keil; altos Chelsea Moos, Kristin Meitler,
Rachel Thompson, Heather Schonthaler, Jessica Thompson, Mackenzie Becker and
Myriah Penrod, and baritones Josh and Allen Brackeen and Noel Morales.
"It was quite entertaining. I thought we did a fantastic job. We gave an
inspired performance," Hemphill said.
The Cardinal Boosters for the month of December
are freshmen Aubrey Frederking and Alan Crawford.
Frederking is involved in volleyball, cross country, basketball, track, and
FCCLA. Her favorite color is purple, and she loves to watch the movie Cool Runnings.
Her favorite place to shop is Dick's Sporting Goods. She likes to eat ramen
noodles, and her favorite song is "Who am I?" by Casting Crowns.
Crawford is involved in football, wrestling, FCCLA, and Boy Scouts. His favorite
color is black. His favorite movie is The Chronicles of Riddick, and his favorite
place to shop is Wal-Mart. He loves to eat shrimp and listen to his favorite
song "Let's Go" by Trick Daddy.
The Cardinal Booster asked students what their
New Year's resolutions would be. Here are some of their replies:

This month's guess who has attended PHS for four
years. She has been involved in track, FCCLA, Pep Club and Stuco.
Her favorite movie is Man on Fire, and her favorite food is Mexican. In her
spare time, she enjoys hanging out with her boyfriend and always having a good
time with her friends.

The Booster staff asked several students what the word "comedo" meant. Here are some of their responses:

Cards defeat the Tigers 80-68 in Logan Round Robin
The Cardinals came out of the Logan Round Robin
victorious by winning three out of three games.
The Cardinals took on the Stockton Tigers during the final game of the tournament.
The Cardinals started the game on fire scoring 22 points to the 12 scored by
Stockton after the first quarter. The Cardinals played well in the second quarter,
and Stockton struggled a little. The score at half-time was the Cardinals leading
the Tigers 45 to 26.
The second half, the Cardinals did not play well, and the Tigers tried to take
advantage of the Cardinals' mistakes. At the end of the third quarter, the score
was the Cardinals 57 and the Tigers 44. The Cardinals put their lead to a bigger
margin and the varsity players were able to sit down and let the junior varsity
get some action. The Cardinals won the game by a score of 80 to 68. Scoring
for the Cardinals were senior M.J. Klein with 17, junior Justin Casey 17, senior
Josh Hrabe 15, junior Brock McDowell 11, junior Taylor Dix 9, senior Lance Gosser
3, and senior Brandon Frederking, junior Scott Peavey, junior Dalton Mick, and
sophomore Josh Brungardt each had 2 points.
"We played decent this week, but we found mistakes in our game that we
can improve on," Gosser said.
The Cardinals improved to 4 and 0 on the season.
Wrestlers compete at Colby Tournament
The Cardinal Wrestlers traveled to Colby for the
Colby Dual tournament on December 10-11. The team finished with 2-7 record.
Friday the Cardinals had four duals. Plainville lost their first dual with a
score of 60-18 to Shawnee Heights. Plainville then wrestled TMP and won 49-21.
Their third dual of the night was against Hoxie, but the Cards fell short with
a score of 44-32. The last dual of the night the Cards lost to Oberlin with
a score of 33-36. The Cards won seven out of the twelve matches that dual.
The first dual of Saturday morning was against Garden City. Garden won the dual
with a score of 47-20. The Cards won five out of twelve matches.
The Cards then wrestled later that day to see if they would place 13th, 14th,
or 15th. They dueled Hays High and Phillipsburg. The Cards won 37-27 against
Hays. The Cards won 8 out the 12 matches. The Cards then wrestled Phillipsburg
and lost 49-24. The Cards won 5 out of the 12 matches.
Overall the Cards finished 14th of the day.
Owings won all seven of his matches.
"I felt best about my 7-2 decision over Hays Highs Wickham," senior
Paul Owings said.
Lady Cards defeat Stockton 41-37 at Logan
The Lady Cardinals defeated the Stockton Tigers
at Logan, December 11 with a final score of 41-37.
Throughout the first quarter, the ladies played hard keeping up with Tigers,
tying with them 12-12. During the second quarter, the Cards began to fall short
ending the quarter 23-24.
After half-time the ladies came out ready to play with determination. At the
end of the third quarter the ladies trailed by one with a score of 29-30.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Cards were ready to finish it off
with a win. The ending score was 41-37.
Scoring for the Cards were junior Eden Rinehart with 9, senior Megan Becker
with 8 and Kelcee Meitler with 7, juniors Caroline Hrabe with 5, Jenna Fellhoelter
and Holly Chew with 4, and freshman Aubrey Frederking with 4.
The Cards ended the tournament with a 2-1 record winning over Stockton and Phillipsburg
and losing to Logan.
"I think we played really hard. We knew what we had to do to win, and we
all came together and played as a team to win the game," Becker said.
