Band and choir members compete at regional contest

Members of the band and choir went to Regional Solo and Small Ensemble Contest at Fort Hays State University on April 2.
Senior Lauren Hemphill earned a I rating with a vocal solo. The mixed ensemble of Hemphill , junior Jenna Fellhoelter, senior Kristen Meitler, senior Noel Morales, junior Josh Brackeen, junior Rachel Thompson, junior Chelsea Moos, junior Mackenzie Becker, and senior Heather Schonthaler earned a I. The trumpet trio of Becker, senior Amanda Husmann, and junior Holly Chew also earned a I. Junior Jessica Wilkerson earned a I rating with the clarinet solo. Junior Jesse Husmann earned a I rating with the snare drum solo. Junior Specer Blecha earned a I rating with the alto saxophone solo. The flute trio of sophomore Vanessa Owings, junior Caroline Hrabe, and freshman Aubrey Frederking earned a I. Senior Kelsey Bjornstad earned a I rating with the snare oboe solo. Freshman Aaron Becker earned a I rating with the snare drum solo. The percussion ensemble of J Husmann, A Becker, freshman Jason Dinkel, junior Amber Cooper, and Blecha earned a I. The saxophone trio of Blecha, freshman Alan Crawford, and freshman Joe Becker earned a I. J Husmann earned a I rating with timpani solo. The clarinet trio of Schonthaler, Wilkerson and freshman Bretta Mick also earned and I rating.
Brackeen, M Becker, Schonthaler, and Morales earned a II rating vocal solo. Trumpet solos by A Husmann and M Becker earned a II rating. Flue solos by freshman Amelia Keas and freshman Lacci Cunningham earned a II rating. Mick earned a II rating with the clarinet solo. Keas earned a II rating with piccolo solo. J Becker earned a II rating with the tenor sax solo. Blecha earned a II rating with the snare drum solo. Crawford earned a II rating with the alto sax solo.
The Brass Ensemble also performed, including M Becker, A Husmann, Chew, sophomore Kennis Becker, junior Taylor Dix, freshman Ben Gehring, freshman Justin Lacy and J Husmann.
State competition is scheduled for April 30 at Cloud Couny Community College.

"Shanghai Moon" theme for Prom

The Junior-Senior Prom was held on April 16, 2005 from 6:50 until 11 p.m. The theme was Shanghai Moon and the colors were black, red, and white.
There was a short reception in the air room when the students arrived. After the dinner everyone went into the band room watch the prom video that junior Chelsea Moos put together. The meal followed and the menu was glazed chicken over wild rice, corn, roll, baked potato, egg roll, cherry/apple crisp, and fortune cookies. The music was provided by Complete Music. Seniors Seth Brin and Lauren Hemphill were crowned King and Queen.
After Prom was held at Auction City Limits from midnight until 3 a.m. Everyone received a number and a bag with tickets and play money to play games. They were able to play many games where they won tickets to put into a drawings for the big prizes. Throughout the night when you heard your number called, you could pick a prize. At the end of the night they drew for the big prizes. At the end of the night they drew for the big prizes. Some winners of the big prizes were junior Tyler Brungardt, mini fridge; senior Kristen Meitler, TV with built in dvd player; junior Amber Cooper, car speakers; senior Brandon Brown, stereo; senior Josh Hrabe, grill and senior Charlie Meitler, glider rocker.

April Booster

This month's Booster are freshmen Bretta Mick and Ben Gehring.
Mick is involved in volleyball, basketball, track, FCCLA, band, and dance. Her favorite quote is "Life isn't measured by breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." If she could vacation anywhere it would be Italy. Her life ambitions are still undecided.
Gehring is involved in football, basketball, baseball, and FCCLA. His favorite quote is "Winners never quit and quiters never win." His idea of a perfect date is a good movie. If he could go anywhere on vacation he would go to the Bahamas. His plans to grow up and have a good job.

What does it mean?

The Cardinal Booster Staff visited with some PHS students and teachers to see if they knew the meaning of the word "mumblecrust." Below are some replies.

Graduation Plans

The 2005 senior class members of Plainville High School are well on their way of making plans for their upcoming graduation. Graduation will be held on May 21 at Cardinal Field. The even will take place at 2:30 p.m. Ryan, Ewy will be the speaker. He was the math teacher for the Plainville Junior High during 2000 and 2001.
The class motto is " We may not have it all together, but together we have it all." The class flower is the Gerber Daisy.
This year the senior class will be wearing red and black gowns. The girls will be wearing the red gowns and the boys will be wearing the black gowns. The 2005 senior class colors are orange and green.
The people that are handing out diplomas are Mr. Hemphill, Mrs. Brin, and Dr. Nuckols. The people that are handing programs are Caroline Hrabe and Stuart Rempe.

FCCLA members earn gold at state; will compete in nationals

FCCLA attended State Meeting in Wichita at the Century II building April 4 and 5.
The people who attended were senior Amanda Husmann; sophomore Samantha Hixon, Jessica Wilkens, and Megan Plante, and freshmen Deanna Garvert, Darla Monroe, Brooklyn Foster and Bretta Mick. Brenda Koehler and Eileen Plante also attended the meeting as sponsors.
"It was a lot of fun. There were great speakers," Garvert said.
Foster and Mick competed in Focus on the Children which received a gold medal. They will compete in nationals in San Diego, California the summmer.

2005-2006 Dance Team tryouts held

Nine girls tried out for the Cardinal Dance Team for the 2005-2006 year.
Tryouts were held on Wednesday, April 20 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The nine girls trying out were juniors Rachel Thompson and Jessica Wilkerson, freshman Bretta Mick, and eighth graders Michelle Adam, Kassandra Collins, Karlee Custenborder, Kiley Knouf, Kelsey Normandin, and Danielle Parson.
All nine were chosen for dance team. Captains are Rachel Thompson and Jessica Wilkerson with Connie Reishus as sponsor. The girls were judged by the Fort Hays State dancers.
This summer the girls plan on attending Emporia State NDA Camp for Small Schools, June 5-7.

Guess Who?

This month's Guess Who is a junior. She is involved in Pep-Club and volleyball.
Her favorite move is Urban Cownboy. Her favorite song is "45" by Shinedown. She enjoys eating at Arby's or any kind of Mexican food. Her life philosophy is that you only get on life, so don't throw it away.

Lady Cards win one, lose one in a double header with Lincoln

The lady Cardinal softball team traveled to Lincoln for a double header April 19. They had a split double header with a big win of 13 to 2 in the first game and a close score of 18 to 20 in the second game.
In the first game, Caroline Hrabe pitches all 7 innings and only gave up 2 runs.
Running across the plate from the Cardinals were juniors Raquel Marcotte with 3, Jenna Fellhoelter with 2, Holly Chew, Katie Nicholas, and Caroline Hrabe with 1. Seniors were Nicole Wessel with 2, Kelsey Bjornstad, Paige Lowry, and Charlie Meitler with 1. The Cards scored 13 runs for the final score of 13 to 2.
In the second game, Rachel Thompson pitches the 1st inning and Caroline Hrabe pitched the last 6 innings.
Scoring for the Cards were juniors Holly Chew with 2, Jenna Fellhoelter and Rachel Thompson with 2, and Raquel Marcotte with 1. Seniors were Kelsey Bjornstad and Paige Lowry with 3, Nicole Wessel with 2, and Charlie Meitler with 1.
The next action for the Cards was last Friday against Ellis and Tuesday against Belleville, but the results were not available at press time. The Cards will play Colby next Tuesday with action beginning at 4.

 

Plainville golf team takes 3rd at home

The Plainville Cardinals hosted the Plainville Invitational Golf Tournament Apirl 18. The Cardinals took two varsity teams and three Junior Varsity players to the tournament.
The Cards cam away with three individual places and a second straight third place team medal.
Junior Garrett Frederking took 3rd with a team low score of 81, senior Ross Balthazor took 14th shooting a 90 on the day, and junior Spencer Blecha shot a 91 taking 15th. Senior Brandon Frederking was one stroke away from placing shooting a 92, senior Seth Brin was not far behind shooting a 93, and rounding out the varsity A team was senior Paul Owings shooting a 112.
The Plainville B team shot well also. Freshman Justin Lacy led the way with a 94; followed by sophomore Andy Brown shooting an even 100, junior Cory McQueen shot a 101. Senior Travis Williams shot a 106;senior Heather Schonthaler shot a 132, and sophomore Kennis Becker shot a 135.
The three Plainville C team players shot nine holes instead of eighteen. Junior Tracy Rudman had a low score for the Cardinal C team shooting a 59 followed by sophomore Seth Keas shooting a 68, and senior Jake Weigel shot an 81 on the afternoon.
The Cards will go to Oakley May 3 for their next action.

Cards split games with Lincoln

The Cards split a double header in away action with Lincoln April 19 at 4:30 p.m.
They won the first game 5 to 0 in which sophomore Jason Williams pitches a 7 inning shut out.
Five Cards contributed one run each for the victory: juniors Taylor Dix and Tyler Brungardt, sophomores Josh Brungardt and Luke Brin, and freshman Aaron Dinkel.

Cheer Tryouts

The 2005-2006 cheerleading tryouts were held in the high school gym March 31. The Fort Hays State cheerleaders were the judges for the competition.
The ladies had to learn the Cardinal routine, a group cheer, and an individual cheer provided by senior Kelcee Meitler.
Cheerleaders for the 2005-2006 squad are junors Chelsea Moos and Amber Cooper; sophomores Samantha Hixon, Vanessa Owings, and Megan Plante; freshman Katie McQueen, Cassie Meyers, Amelia Keas, Heather Hageman, and Ashlee Storda; and eighth graders Lauren Buresh and Katelynn Thyfault. The sponsers include Jennifer Stroda and Brenda Koehler.
Plante and Hixon were chosen from the team captains after taking sports knowledge test, going through an interview, and getting a teacher evaluation.
The squad will be attending a camp this upcoming summer. The place and time is still undecided.
"I am looking forward to the upcoming year, and I'm excited to see what we can do as a squad," Hixon said.

Ladies finish 1st at home track meet

The Plainville Invitational track meet took place Tuesday, April 19. The boys placed sixth with 26 points. The girls placed first with 132 points.
Senior Morgan Malin placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.5. Senior Megan Becker placed 2nd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28. Freshman Aubrey Frederking placed 1st in the 800 meter run with a time of 02:34:12. Frederking also placed 1st in the 1600 meter run with a time of 05:33:72. Frederking came back again and placed 1st in the 3200 meter run with a time of 13:06:22. Senior Kelcee Meitler placed first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.94. Meitler returned in to place 1st in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 15.5. In the high jump sophomore Vanessa Owings placed 2nd with a height of 9'0".
For the boys junior Scott Peavey placed 5th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12:5. Peavey returned and placed 4th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25:46. In shot put senior M.J. Klein threw a shot 43'9" for a 3rd place finish. Freshman Aaron Dinkel placed 3rd in the high jump with a height of 5'6". Junior Jesse Husmann placed 5th in the pole vault with a height of 8'6".
The next competition for the Cards will be at Victoria May 5 with the starting time of 3:30.
