Juniors and seniors share "Times Like These" at Prom
The junior/senior prom was held Saturday, April 17 in the Grade School Cafeteria.
This year was different from the other years because each student was given a breathalyzer before entering Prom.
The social took place from 6:30-6:50. Junior class president Heather Schonthaler presented the welcome. The dinner took place at 7, followed by the dance at 8. The prom king and queen for this year were Quintin Plante and Jordan Finnesy.
Parents of PHS juniors and seniors hosted an After-Prom party at the auction city limits from midnight until 5 a.m.
The prom theme this year was " Times Like These." The theme song was "Times Like These" by The Foo Fighters.
The meal served at the dinner included chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, a tossed salad, roll and cheese cake for dessert.
The band that performed was Gypsy Road. Some of the band members are former PHS students including Tyler Ganoung and Jason Lindsey.
At After Prom, there were 2 groups of people participating in the Air Band contest. The first group included juniors Paige Lowry, Morgan Malin, Charlie Meitler, Megan Becker, Kelcee Meitler, Kelsey Bjornstad who were called "In Kast". "In Kast" lip-synced to "Hey Yeah" by OutKast and won the grand prize of a total of 100 dollars. The other group consisted of seniors Ryan Lovelady, and Alex Smetana, juniors Paul Owings, Ross Balthazor and Jacob Weigel. The name of their group was called the "Rick James and the purple jooz." "Rick James and the purple jooz" lip-synced to "Johnny B. Good" and got second place and took home 50 dollars.
The theme of After Prom was "Fear Factor." There were games being played during After Prom to test the fear of students. After prom was concluded at 5 when the bigger prizes were given away.
Concert Band and Jazz Band perform annual spring concert
The band performed its spring concert Tuesday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The concert band performed "Midway March" by John Williams, "Glorious things of Thee Are Spoken" by James Plothar, "My Heart Will Go On" by James Horner, and "Jubiloso" by Ed Huckeby.
The jazz selections were " Na Na Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Jerry Nowak, "Somewhere Out There" by James Horner, "Can't Buy Me Love" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, "So Nice" by Jerry Nowak, "The Varsity Drag" by Jerry Howak.
Through the evening, various solos were performed. Performing solos were Aryn Garvin, flute; Jesse Husmann, drums; and Makenzi Rempe, clarinet.
Performing ensembles were Rempe, Jessica Casey, Heather Schonthaler, and Jessica Wilkerson with a clarinet ensemble. Garvin, Vanessa Owings, and Caroline Hrabe with a flute trio. Husmann, Justin Morris, Samantha Hixon, Amber Cooper, and Spencer Blecha with a percussion ensemble.
FCCLA hosts annual awards banquet
FCCLA held their annual banquet on April 26 in the Plainville High School gym. The seven officers for the 2003-2004 year were honored. They were Jordan Finnesy, President; Aryn Garvin, VP of Membership: Kelsey Bjornstad, Secretary; Jordyn Wilkens, VP of Finance; Paige Lowry, VP of Recognition and VP of Programs; and Amanda Husmann, VP of Public Relations.
The executive council for 2004-2005 are Amanda Husmann, President Paige Lowry, VP of Membership; Kelsey Bjornstad, Secretary; Megan Plante, VP of Finance; Morgan Malin, VP of Recognition and VP of Programs; and Emily Jones, VP of Public Relations. Amanda Husmann is also a District B VP of Star Events.
The banquet began with a parade of officers, followed by the opening ceremony given by Jordan Finnesy. Finnesy then gave a welcome, and the invocation was given by Norman Finnesy. A buffet style meal followed.
After the meal, Aryn Garvin gave the New Membership Ceremony. The recognition awards followed. Amanda Husmann and Emily Jones received a gold star for the Star Event awards. The Power of One Awards were as follows: Step 1- Emily Jones, Jessica Wilkens, and Megan Plante. Take the Lead- Amanda Husmann. Freshman Emily Jones was the top salesperson, with junior Amanda Husmann taking 2nd and junior Noel Morales taking 3rd.
FCCLA advisor Shari Tucker said, "This year we broke the tradition of having the banquet in the cafeteria. It was a lot handier to have it at the high school gym. Overall I was very pleased with the projects we completed this year."
The Cardinal Booster for the month of April are freshmen Samantha Hixon and Jarrett Claridge.
Hixon is involved in volleyball, basketball, track, and cheerleading. She is in FCCLA, CCD, Stuco, Pep Club, TASMAD and band. In her spare time you can find her hanging out with her friends or in Vanessa's hot tub. Her favorite movie is Ice Age, and she has too many songs to pick a favorite from. Her favorite food is spaghetti. She plans to attend college and become a lawyer.
Claridge is involved in basketball. He is also involved in high school youth group. In his spare time you can find playing basketball, watching television, or playing games. His favorite movie is Signs, and his favorite song is "Crossroads, by Bone Thugs N Harmony. His favorite food is pizza. He plans to attend college and get a job.
The Cardinal Booster for the month of May are seniors Quintin Plante and Jordan Wilkens.
Plante's school activities are football, All School play and CYO. His favorite movie is Butterfly Effect, and his favorite food is school food. In his spare time he would enjoy hanging out with friends, fishing or even listening to his favorite song "Numb" by Linkin Park. After high school he plans to attend Fort Hays State University.
Wilkens is involved in volleyball, softball, FCCLA, Pep Club, All School Play, TASMAD, choir, CYO, and she is class treasurer. In her spare time she would watch her favorite movie Beaches or listen to her favorite song " Take my Breathe away" by Berlin. Some of her hobbies consist of riding around, singing, hanging out with friends, or eating any kind of Mexican food. After high school she will attend Washburn University by this fall, and while she is there, she plans to major in pre-law journalism.
FFA hosts annual Awards Banquet
The Plainville FFA held their 55th annual banquet on May,3.
Seniors Matt McCune and Aryn Garvin both received scholarships from the FFA for $550. McCune also received the Ott scholarship for $200.
Awards were also given to individuals receiving the Greenhand Award were Freshmen Luke Brin, Matt Young, Matt Hageman, Justin McCune, Lucas Hachmeister, Seth Keas, and Kennis Becker.
Keas also got Top Greenhand Honors. Top Fruit sales went to junior Mark Axelson. Community Service Award went to sophomore Jacob Keas. The Farm Bureau Award went to McCune and Garvin
H.S. choir presents spring concert
The Plainville Junior High and High School choral department held their final music concert of the year on May 3, 2004. They performed under the direction of Jeanette Sommer and Connie Reishus with Leslie Fogle, Kelsey Bjornstad, and Lauren Hemphill accompanying.
The high school choir performed five songs. "Love Is a Light";"Little Lamb", with Chelsea Moos and Kristen Meitler as soloists. "Let it Be", with Michelle Reishus and Noel Morales as soloists; "There Is a Season", with Makenzi Rempe and Josh Brackeen as soloists, and "The Crawdad Song", with Allen Brackeen as soloist. After that, the sixth grade, seventh grade, eighth grade, and high school choirs combined to perform the song "One Song, Many Voices."
"We had a lot of fun this year, especially with the bigger number of people in choir. It made it more exciting," senior Michelle Reishus said.
PHS musicians participate in state contest
Members of the band and choir went to the State and Small Ensemble Contest in Concordia on April 26.
The results for solos are as follow: senior Makenzi Rempe received a 1 rating for her clarinet solo, senior Aryn Garvin received a 2 rating on her flute solo, junior Kelsey Bjornstad received a 2 rating on her oboe solo, senior Michelle Reishus received a 1 rating on her vocal solo, sophomore Spencer Blecha received a 3 rating for his alto saxophone solo, sophomore Jesse Husmann received two 1 ratings for his snare and multiple percussion solo, and sophomore Mackenzie Becker received a 2 rating for her trumpet solo.
Four ensembles each received 1 ratings. The Trumpet ensemble featured Reishus, M. Becker, sophomore Taylor Dix, junior Amanda Husmann, sophomore Holly Chew, and freshman Kennis Becker. The flute ensemble featured Garvin, sophomore Caroline Hrabe, and freshman Vanessa Owings. The clarinet ensemble featured Rempe, senior Jessica Casey, junior Heather Schonthaler, and sophomore Jessica Wilkerson . The percussion ensemble featured J. Husmann, Blecha, senior Justin Morris, sophomore Amber Cooper, and freshman Samantha Hixon.
This person selected for this month's Guess Who has attended PHS for four years. The persons favorite song is "Let It Be" sung by the PHS choir. The Guess Who's favorite food is taco etc. and pomegranate. In his spare time he likes to help Gina Chard fix all the broken computers and bungee-jump. Can you guess who this month's Guess Who is?
Cards win one; lose one against Sylvan
The Plainville Cardinal baseball team traveled to Sylvan Grove on April 29,2004.
The Cards won their first game 14-5 but fell in their second one 3-10. The Cards' record after these games is 8 wins and 3 losses.
Senior Joel Hrabe pitches the first game and senior A.J. Garcia pitches the second. Scoring for the Cards in the first game were sophomore Taylor Dix-1, senior Ben Ruder-1, Garcia-3 Joel Hrabe-3, senior Alex Smetana-2, junior Josh Hrabe-1, sophomore Tyler Brungardt-1, freshman Matt Hageman-1, and Sophomore Dalton Mick with 1 run. In the second game, Dix, Smetana and Josh Hrabe scored the Card's three runs.
Lady Cards drop two close games to Belleville
The Lady Cards played Belleville April 27,2004. The ladies lost the first game 6-7 and the second 5-6.
Pitching both games was senior Kelsey Ross. Scoring in the first game with one were sophomores Jenna Fellhoelter and Katee Nicholas, junior Kelsey Bjornstad, and seniors Ross, Michelle Reishus, and Amy Normandin.
Scoring in the second game with one were Reishus, junior Charlie Meitler, and Normandin. Ross scored two this game.
Individual results spell success for track
On April 23, the Plainville Cardinal track team traveled to Phillipsburg to compete against Phillipsburg, Russell, Victoria, Norton, and Smith Center.
For the Lady Cardinals, freshman Vanessa Owings placed 5th in the Pole Vault. She also placed 4th in the 300 meter hurdles. Freshman Samantha Hixon placed 4th in the 400 meter dash. Sophomore Eden Rinehart placed 6th in the 400 meter dash and the javelin. Junior Megan Becker led the Cardinals by bringing home three gold medals. She placed first in the long jump, 4 by 100 meter dash, and the 200 meter dash. Junior Morgan Malin placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash, and 1st in the 4 by 100 meter relay.
Senior Jordan Finnesy placed 1st in the 100 and the 4 by 100 meter relay. She also placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash.
The boys were only able to place one person. Jesse Husmann placed 6th in the 110 meter hurdles.
Golfers compete at Trego Invitational
The Cardinal Golf team competed in the Trego Invitational on Friday, April 29 The 6-man Team placed 6th out of eleven teams.
Senior Travis Double placed 6th with a score of 90. Garret Frederking placed 8th with a score of 90. The other scores were junior Seth Brin with a 100, sophomore Cory Brin with a 102, senior Tyler Nelson with a 102, sophomore Spencer Blecha with a 105, junior Ross Balthazor with a 106, and senior Justin Morris with a 125.
Members of new cheerleading squad
The cheerleading try outs took place March 26 at the High School gym.
The judges of the competition were Barton County Community College Cheerleaders.
The 2004-05 cheerleaders are returning members juniors Kelcee Meitler, sophomore Chelsea Moos, freshman Samantha Hixon, and freshman Megan Plante. The new members include junior Kelsey Bjornstad, sophomore Amber Cooper, and eighth graders Katie McQueen, Cassie Meyers, Deanna Garvert, Ashely Stroda, Amelia Keas, and Heather Hageman.
New dance team set for next year
The PHS Crimson Cardinal dance team tryouts were held on April 1
There were 11 girls trying out all together, with only 8 making the team. They are 8th-grader Bretta Mick, freshman Vanessa Owings, Sophomores Caroline Hrabe, Rachel Thompson, Raquel Marcotte, Jaclyn Brock, and Jessi wilkerson, and junior Kristen Meitler. Meitler will be next year's team captain.
Activities banquet sponsored to recognize students accomplishments
The Plainville Cardinal booster Club held the PHS Activities Banquet for all of the high school students involved in any activities throughout the year. It was held in the grade school cafeteria on Friday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m.
The meal was served by Bigge's Catering. The guest speaker for the night was Gary Musselman, The Kansas State High School Activities Association Executive Director.
Letters for each sport and awards for other activities were presented to students. The basketball team also presented an autographed basketball to Marty and Jody Balthazor.
Three Athletic Awards were presented to deserving senior. Joel Hrabe received the Olen Smrka award. Alex Smetana received the Leon Bair Award. Jordan Finnesy received the Joe Mongeau Award.
Stuco sponsored the annual Cardinal Day on Wednesday, May 5.
Since it was an early release day, the students were released at 10 a.m. to participate in different activities. Such activities included Lava Pit(Jousting), Boxing, Obstacle Course, and Mountain Climb.
There were some other activities as well such as hackey-sack, football, and playing in the sprinklers. At 12.30 p.m. lunch was served. For lunch they served hamburgers, bakes beans, chips, candy, and pop.
Later students were dismissed at 1:45.
