Plainville art students earn numerous ribbons at show

Plainville art student participated in the Grand Federated Women's Club Art Show at Kansas Weslyan in Salina. The show was on display from Feb. 4 to Feb. 27.

"I was very please. We took almost 20 pieces, and every piece placed in the top 3, with 8 receiving top honors. Teacher Cullen Jackson said.

Blecha entered four pieces of 3-d abstract digital imagery create with Photoshop.

Blecha said, "It was a good opportunity to display my art. I feel very happy receiving a blue ribbon because it was my first time to participate in an art show."

Music students participate in contest

Seven vocals and twenty-one band members will be going to Hays, Kansas on April 3rd to take part in the Band and Vocal Regional Contest.

Members of the band were senior Aryn Garvin (flute-"Nightingale Polka"), senior Kristen Dinkel (flute-"ballet of the Shepaherda"), senior Makenzie Rempe (clarinet-"Sharps in C minor"), junior Amanda Husman (trumpet-"Gavotte from Symphony #4"), senior Amanda Fogle (tenor saxophone-"Magnate and Presto"), sophomore Makenzie Becker (trumpet-"A Trumpet's Lullaby"), and junior Kelsey Bjournstad (oboe-"Piece for G Minor").

Other band entries are flute trio (Garvin, Dinkel. and Hrabe-"Glutation"), clarinet quartet (Rempe, Casey, Schonthaler, and Wilkerson-"Fan Fare and Processional"), saxophone quartet (Blecha, Fogle, T. Brungardt, Brungardt-"interemezzo: by George Bezet, trumpet ensemble ("Bright Eyes"Reishus, Dix Becker, Chew, Husman, and Becker), Precussion Quintet (J. Husman, Hixon,Copper, Morris, and Blecha-"Five Drums in Drive").

Other competing were Connor McMullen (Bariton-:conqueror"), J. Husman (Snare-"Sounds of"). Blecha (Alto Saxophone Sonata-"Jean Leillet"), and J. Husman (Sanre).

Vocals are Reishus singing "The Little Road to Kenny" and "Grenn Pastures", Rempe singing "The Piper of Gairyland" and "Praise-We the Lord", Laurne Hemphill signing "When the roses Bloom" and " The Ash Grove", Jordan Wilkens singing "That's an Irish Lullaby" and "Sing Me to Sleep", Josh Brackeen singing "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and "Beautiful Breamer", Noel Morales singing "Passing By" and "Rolling Down to Rio", and Allen Brackeen singing "Amazing Grace" and Watchman's Song".

Vocal students perform concert

The Plainville Junior High and High School vocal concert was held on Tuesday March 9, 2004 in the Plainville High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

The first performers of the night were the sixth graders. They performed four songs, which were "Pie Jesu," "Wintersong," The Sow Took the Measels," and "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"

Next to perform were the seventh and eight graders. They performed two pieces called "Sleep, My Child," and "Boll Weevil." Eight graders Amelia Keas performed a solo, called "Amazing Grace." Combined, the junior high performed "Kazoos H' Shoes Blues."

The last performers of the night was in the High School chorus. They sang "All the Pretty Little Horses," "The Ash Grove," "Three Contemporary Songs," "Only Hope." "Can't Help Falling in Love," and "Till the Stars Fall From the Sky," which featured senior Jordyn Wilkens and Sophomore Josh Brackeen.

To close the evening, the high school choir performed "River in Judea."

Juniors make plans for Prom, April 17

Prom will be held on April 17.

The theme is " Times like These" by the Foo Fighters. The music will be provided by Gypsy Road. The dinner is undecided. The After Prom theme is Fear Factor 2004. Everything kicks off at 6:30 with the social. Then at 6:50 will be the welcoming which will be followed by the dinner. The dance starts at 8 and concludes at 11, and the night ends with After Prom.

The prom servers will be Justin Casey, Taylor Dix, Brock McDowell, Cory McQueen, Caroline Hrabe, Katie Nicholas, Selby Renk, and Brooke Stahl.

February Boosters

The Cardinal Boosters for the month of February are juniors Noel Morales and Lauren Hemphill.

Hemphill is involved in basketball and softball and the Christian Church Youth Group. She enjoys watching Almost Famous and listening to "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. Her favorite food is Katee's Mom's enchiladas. In her spare time, she likes to have fun with her friends and play basketball. Her plans after high school are to move to Hays and live with Charlie Meitler and to attend Fort Hays State University.

Morales is involved in basketball, baseball, and FCCLA. Morales enjoy watching The Sixth Sense listening to "In the End" by Linkin Park. His favorite food is pizza. In his spare time he likes to draw and sing. After high school he plans to attend a college or vo-tech.

March Boosters

The Cardinal Boosters for the month of March are Scott Peavey and Eden Rinehart.

Peavey's school activities involve football, basketball, track, and pep club. He enjoys drinking Dr. Pepper while he watches the Simpsons. His favorite pastime is to hang out with friends. After high school, he plans to attend college somewhere.

Rinehart is involved in volleyball, basketball, track, and FCCLA. She enjoys hanging out with Seth Brin and watching friends. Her favorite beverages are apple juice and Dr. Pepper. After high school she plans on attending a college or university, getting a job, getting married, and having a family.

NHS Inductions

The National Honor Society hosted their annual induction ceremony February 3, 2004.

The new inductees are juniors Kristen Dinkel and Amanda Husmann and sophomores Makenzie Becker, Tyler Brungardt, Connor McMullen, Jesse Husmann, and Eden Rinehart. Current members are Jessica Casey- President, Michelle Reishus- Vice President, Makenzi Rempe- Secretary, Aryn Garvin- Treasurer, Amanda Fogle- Reporter, Kelsey Ross and Heather Schonthaler.

The ceremony began with a welcome from sponsor Connie Reishus. Invocation was given by Kelsey Ross, and a pot-luck dinner followed. After the meal, Reishus presented the National Honor Society Senior Leadership Award to president Jessica Casey. The ceremony was then opened by Reishus. The meaning of "Scholarship" was given by Jessica Casey, "Leadership" by Makenzi Rempe, "Character" by Aryn Garvin, and was concluded by Amanda Fogle. The lighting of the candles followed the presentation.

"We're really excited to have so many new members. I'm anxious to work with them," Reishus said.

Youth For Music

Individuals from choir and band traveled to Concordia, February 1 for the Youth for Music contest.

In the 9-10 choir were sophomore Josh Brackeen and junior Noel Morales. They sang "Shut de Do," "Lord of the Dance" and "Elijah and Joshua."

In the 11-12 choir were seniors Jordyn Wilkens and Michelle Reishus and junior Lauren Hemphill. They sang "Festival Sactus," "Cantar" and "Ose Shalom."

In the band were, senior Makenzi Rempe and sophomore Jessica Wilkerson, clarinets. On the trumpet were Mackenzi Becker and junior Amanda Husmann. On the timpani and snare was sophomore Jesse Husmann. They played "Armed Forces Salute," "Provenance" and "Overature for Winds."

FCCLA Star Events

This year's Star Events were held on February 11 in Osborne

The students attending the trip were as follows: seniors Aryn Garvin, Jordan Finnesy and Jordyn Wilkens; juniors Paige Lowry, Kelsey Bjornstad, and Amanda Husmann; and freshman Emily Jones

FFA Week events

FFA Week was during the week of February 23. Members of the Plainville FFA Chapter held their annual teacher's breakfast on February 26. They also enjoyed a pizza party that week. "I enjoyed knowing that there is a week honoring all FFA members and also making breakfast for the teachers then serving them," senior Aryn Garvin said.

Winter Glacade royalty and dance

Joel Hrabe, Tyler Nelson, Quintin Plante, Adam Meyers, Alex Smetana, Julie Hrabe, Kelsey Ross, Jordan Finnesy, Jordyn Wilkens and Jessica Casey were nominated for Winter Glacade King and Queen. The junior escorts were Cade Megaffin and Shania Werner.

The crowning was Tuesday, February 10 when the boys and girls played Kensington at home. At half-time of the boys game, Jamie Stahl and Ryan Williams (king and queen last year) crowned Joel Hrabe and Julie Hrabe as Winter Glacade king and queen.

The Winter Glacade dance was held on Saturday, February 14 at 8 p.m. The DJ for the dance was Music Video To Go and the dance concluded at 11:00.

Guess Who?

This PHS student has attended high school for two years he is involved in basketball and baseball. His favorite song is "Rico Suave" by Gerardo. His favorite movie is "Dumb and Dumber," and his favorite food is a cheeseburger. In his spare time he likes to listen to music and hang out with friends.

The newspaper staff asked students what they did over spring break. The following are some of their replies:

The Plainville Cardinal Booster staff asked a few of the students what they thought the word "zythepsary" ( zith-epp-sayr-ee) means. These are some of the responses.

Senior Jordan Finnesy said " It is an ancient story from Japan.

Junior Dustin Malin said, " It is what helker checks his oil with"

Sophomore Josh Eichman said " it is a food."

The true answer is a brewery.

Fourteen Cards out for baseball

This years Cardinal Baseball team is led by Coach Bob Mickelson. Fourteen boys are out this year.
The Freshman include Luke Bring, Jason Williams, Matt Hageman, and Josh Brungardt, The Sophomores include Tyler Brungardt, Taylor Dix, Brock McDowell, and Dalton Mick. The Juniors include: Josh Hrabe, and Noel Morales. The Seniors are Ben Ruder, Joel Hrabe, A.J. Garcia, Ryan Lovelady and Alex Smetana.


They hope to improve this year by having a winning season. "I believe we can improve this year by having a winning record," senior Ben Ruder said.

Sixteen golfers

Sixteen members are out for golf this season under the coaching of Jeremy Krob.


They are seniors Tyler Nelson, Travis Double and Justin Morris; Juniors Ross Balthazor, Travis Williams, Heather Schonthaler, Kristen Dinkel, Seth Brin, and Paul Owings; Sophomores Jessica Wilkerson, Spencer Blecha, Cory McQueen, and Garret Frederking; Freshman are Seth Keas, Kennis Becker, and Andy Brown. The first tournament was on April 13th at Osborne.

Nineteen lady cards round out the team

This year's 2004 Plainville Cardinal softball team is led by Coach Lee Weber. There are 19 girls out this year.

Sophomores include Gloria Ruder, Caroline Hrabe, Holly Chew, Jenna Fellhoelter, Selby Renk, Rachel Thompson, Raquel Marcotte, Katee Nicholas, and Chelsea Moos. Juniors include: Nicole Wessell, Kelsey Bjornstad, Lauren Hemphill, Charlie Meitler, and Paige Lowry. Seniors include: Amy Normandin, Kelsey Ross, Michelle Reishus, Jordyn Wilkens, and Makenzi Rempe.

The team is looking to improve on last year's season by making it to state.

"Our goal is to win regional and place at state," senior Kelsey Ross said.

Track teams formed

Eight girls and ten boys round out the track teams under the direction of Head Coach Norma Finnesy and Assistant Coach Scott Staab.

Members of the girls team are senior Jordan Finnesy, junior Morgan Malin, junior Megan Becker, junior Kelcee Meitler, sophomore Amber Cooper, sophomore Eden Rinehart, freshman Samantha Hixon and freshman Vanessa Owings.

Members of the boys team are senior Brad Lynch, junior Brandon Frederking, junior M.J. Klein, sophomore Justin Casey, sophomore Jesse Husmann, sophomore Scott Peavey, freshman Lucas Hachmeister and freshman Tommy Sumner.

Their first meet will be the Ellis Varsity Invitational Thursday, April 8.

Owings, Smetana, Garcia qualify for state

Plainville Cardinal Wrestlers traveled to Norton for the "Wild Wild West" Regional on February 20 and 21.

With top-ranked wrestlers and tough competition in every weight class, they knew it would be tough. Plainville brought ten wrestlers and qualified three for the state tournament at Gross Memorial on February 27 and 28. Those qualifying for state were junior Paul Owings (112) and seniors Alex Smetana (189) and A.J. Garcia (215). Owings placed second, Smetana placed third, and Garcia placed fourth.

At the state tournament, all three won their first round matches, Smetana and Garcia suffered a loss in the second round while Owings moved on to the semi-finals. Owings finished off the first day by winning his semi-finals match to put him in the championship. On Saturday morning, Smetana and Garcia won their first matches of the day, but then suffered losses to come up short of placing.

On Saturday night, Owings met up with Madden of Norton for the state championship at 112. They had met twice before during this season, each winning one match. Owings got defeated by a decision of 9-7. Congratulations to Coach Basgall, Coach Dobson, and the Cardinal wrestlers on a successful season.

End of tough season for ladies

The lady Cardinal basketball team traveled to Hoxie to take on the Indians for the first round of sub-state on March 1. The girls got defeated by a final score of 42-77. Sophomores Eden Rinehart and 2 and Jenna Fellhoelter had 3. Seniors Jordan Finnesy, Michelle Reishus, Julie Hrabe and Jessica Casey, and junior Megan Becker all had 4 points. Sophomore Caroline Hrabe had 6, and the top scorer was junior Lauren Hemphill with 11.

The girls worked hard throughout the season with a record of 2 wins and 18 losses to close their 2003-2004 season.

"My last game was sad because I'm going to miss my teammates," senior Jessica Casey said.

Cagers wrap up season at sub-state

The boys basketball team played the Trego Eagles March 5.

The Cardinals defeated the Eagles 62-45. The scores matched nine in the first quarter, but at the half Plainville led by one.

The third quarter ended close with Plainville leading by three, but in the fourth quarter the Cards outscored the Eagles 27-13 for a final score of 62-45.

The scorers were Justin Casey - 8, Taylor Dix - 17, Brandon Frederking - 4, MJ Klein - 14, Brock McDowell - 6, Lance Gosser - 2, Joel Hrabe - 6, and Josh Hrabe - 5.

The Cardinals were defeated March sixth by Quinter finishing as sub-state runner-up.
