Seventy-one students named to 2nd quarter honor rolls

Seventy-one students ahve been named to the second quarter honor rolls.

Twenty students were named to the Administrator's Honor Roll. Students mus maintain a 4.0-3.75 GPA to be eligible for Administrator'sHonor Roll. Seniors: Jessica Casey, Amanda Fogle, Aryn Garvin, Makenzi Rempe, and Kelsey Ross. Juniors: Kristen Dinkel, Heather Schonthaler, and Nicole Wessel. Sophomore: Mackenzie Becker, Tyler Brungardt, Jesse Husmann, Jacob Keas, Connor McMullen, Scott Peavey, an Eden Rinehart. Freshmen: Joshua Brungardt, Seth Keas, Vanessa Owings, Megan Plante, and Jason Williams.

Thirty-five students were named to the Regular Honor Roll. Studnets had to maintain a 3.74-3.33 GPA in order to be eligible for the Regular Honor Roll. Seniors: Craig Baldwin, Nicole Bender, Terri Kenney, Dustin Kraft, Ryan Lovelady, Chantal Maddox, Tyler Marcotte, Andee Marquess, Amy Normandin, Joshua parson, Michelle Reishus, Kira Schumacher, Stacey Selbe, and Alex Smetana. Juniors: Amanda Husmann and Paul Owings. Sophomores: Spencery Blecha, Justin Casey, Amber Cooper, Taylor Dix, Jenna Fellhoelter, Garrett, Frederking, Caroline Hrabe, Dalton Mick, Chelsea Moos, Selby Renk, Tracy Rudman, Brooke Stahl, Rachel Thompson, and Jessica Wilkerson. Freshmen: Luke Brin, Samantha Hixon, Emily Jones, Krystal Karlin, and Caleb Parson.

Sixteen Students were named to the Honorable Mention Honor Roll. Students had to maintain a 3.32-3.0 GPA to be eiligible for the Honorable Mention Honor Roll. Seniors: Justin Morris and Jordyn Wilkens. Juniors: Mark Axelson, Kelsy Bjornstad, Paige Lowery, and Charlie Meitler. Sophomores: Jaclyn Brock, Casey Buganski, Holly Chew, brock McDowell, Katie Nicholas, and Gloria Ruder. Freshmen: Kennis Becker, Justin McCune, Amanda Plante, and Tommy Sumner.

Band concert Feb. 2

The next band concert will be February 2 grades 5-12.
The Jazz band will perform four numbers, the fifth grade band will play "Old McDonald," "When the Saints," "Ode to Joy" and "Hard Rock Blues." The sixth graders will perform "Rock.com." The junior high will play contest nembers:"His Honor March," "Eagle Crest," "Baley Elephant Walk," and "Last Kiss." The high school band will play "Thundercrest March," "All Glory Told," "Londondeery Air," and song from the movie Allidan.
Also the fifth graders will be asking special guests to perform for them.

FFA fruit sales help fund program

FFA had fruit sales for another year.
They Started their fruit sales in the middle of October and ended in the middle of November.

The gross earnings were $3312. The net earnings were approximately $800. The top seller for the sale was Mark Axelson. Sponsor Rick Jackson said the money will be used for future events and FFA scholarships.

Junior Brandon Frederking said,"Fruit sales struggled this year."

New students at PHS

One new student has been finding his way around the hall of PHS: senior Dustin Funk.

Funk came to Plainville from Rantoul, Kansas. Funk came back to Plainville so he could come back to his home and finish school. In his free time he either collects Jeff Gordan collectibles or does some farming. He says that teachers are more helpful here than what they were in Rantoul. He is not planning to be involved in any sports or activities because he works right after school.

FCCLA sales

November 12. The top seller was freshman Emily Jones. The money raised will fo tor funding STAR Events, State Meeting, and FCCLA Wkkd Activities.
"The sale were down this year because of the number of fund-raisers items being sold at the same time." Shari Tucker said

January Boosters

The boosters for the month of January are seniors Justin Morris and Jordan Finnesy.

Morris has been involved in basketball, golf, and youth group. His favorite movie is Dumb and Dumber, and his favorite thing to eat is "school food." In his spare time he likes to play his guitar and chill with his homies. After high school he plans to attend Fort Hays State University.

Finnesy has been involved in volleybal, basketball, and track. She enjoys cheerleading, Stuco, PepClub, and FCCLA. Her Favorite movie is S.W.A.T and her favorite song is "Naggin" by Ying Yang Twins. She enjoys any type of food. In her spare time she is usually found hanging out with friends and having a good time. After high school she plans to attend college.

What would you put in a time capsule?

The Cardinal Booster Staff asked several students about what items they would would put in a time capsule. These are some of their responses:

Freshman Emily Jones said, "I would put in my best math test."

Junior Kelcee Meitler said, "I would put in clothes and some music."

Senior Alex Comeau said, "I would put in my ibook."

Junior Jacob Weigel said, "I would probably put in a large amount of perishable meats and an ace of base shirt."

Sophomore Katie Nicholas said, "Well, I would have to say that I would put in pictures, memoribilia, and a mmpop...for me and Paige in seventy years!"

Senior Tyler Nelson said, "I would put in some music and my cat Doofus."

This month's guess who has attended PHS for two years. He has been involved in baseball and his favorite song is "My Sacrifice" by Creed.
His Favorite movie is League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and his favorite food is brownies. In his spare time he either reads or draws. After school he plans to either go into the Air-Force or go to college. Can you guess who it is?

What does it mean?

The newspaper staff asked some high school students what the word "jumart" meant and here are some of their responses.

Freshamn Jason Williams, said "A shopping makrt in Alaska."

Freshman Vanessa Owings said, "Ashopping mart in Juneau, Alaska."

Spohomore Jenna Fellhoelter said, "A small K-mart."

Junior Nicole Wessel said, "A glue factory."

Senior Alex Smetana said, "It's what happens when you get kicked out of Wal-mart."

Senior Julie Hrabe, "It's another name for Wal-mart in a foreign country."

Sophomore Cory McQueen said, "A tattoo given to people in concentration camps."

The word "jumart" means the fabled offspring of a cow and a donkey.

What you did during Christmas break

The newspaper staff asked some of the PHS students what they did over Christmas vacation. The following are some of their responses.

Sophomore Taylor Dix said, "Ben and i created the game Globberschpot in Mr. K's parking lot".

Sophomore Rachel Thompson said," We went to Wichita to see my dad, family, and went ice skating."

Junior MJ Klein said,"I played basketball and hung out with my friends."

Sophomore Brooke Stahl said, "I was lazy most of the time and celebrated my birthday."

Cardinals drop a tough one to the Trego Eagles at WaKeeney

The Plainville High School boys' basketball team played their seventh game agaisnt Trego High School at Wakeeney on January 9, 2004 with a final score of 49-64. The Cardinals suffered their first loss of the 2003-2004 season at the hands of the Trego Eagles. "I felt we did not play to the best of our ability and it didn't help being our first game back from Christmas break making everybody not as good as usual," junior Josh Hrabe said. Shooting only 48% from the field, the Cardinals were held to 49 points and allowed 64. The team also has a new system to judge each players' performance. Its name is STAR Points and 23 points were scored total on the night. Individual STAR Points were: Justin Casey 2, Taylor Dix 2, Brandon Frederking 2, MJ Klein 8, Brock McDowell 2, Joel Hrabe 3, and Josh Hrabe 4.

Wrestlers defeat TMP with a decisive score of 51-18

The Plainville Cardinal Wrestling team traveled to TMP on January 8 to duel the Monarchs with a final score of 51-18.

To start off the night, there were two exhibition matches, Sophomore Jacob Keas lost by a fall in the first period. Sophomore Connor Mcmullen pinned his man in the second.

Plainville was open at 103 while TMP was not. Bo Brown won by a fall in the third period at 112. Junior Paul Owings won at 119 by a fall in the first period to make the score 12-6. Freshman Lucas Hachmeister got pinned in the second at 125. Sophomore Stuart Rempe at 130 won 5-1. Freshman Luke Brin pinned his man in the second at 135.

Senior Adam Meyers pinned his man in the second also at 140. At 145 junior Catlin Zahorsky lost 6-3. Junior Seth Brin pinned his man in the second at 152 to make the score 33-15. At 160 junior Mark Axelson won 10-7. Sophomore Tyler Brungardt pinned his man in the second at 171 to make the score 42-15. At 189 senior Alex Smetana won 4-3. Senior A.J. Garcia had an open at 215. At 275 senior Ben Ruder lost 5-2. The final score was then 51-18.

Junior Jacob Weigel said, "It was good to beat TMP decisevely after losing to them the frist time in the history last year.

Lady Cards lose to Lady Knights

On Tuesday January 13, the Lady Cards took on the Victoria Lady Knights at home and suffered a loss 25-63. The starting five kept in the game the first couple of minutes, trailing by only a few points. As the game progressed the ladies began to fall short of a Cardinal victory. Scores in the game were seniors Jessica Casey with 3 and Michelle Reishus with 2, junior Megan Becker with 10, and sophomores Eden Rhinehart with 2, Caroline Hrabe with 4, and Jenna Fellhoelter with 3. The final score was 25-63.
