Homecoming Week took place Monday, October 9 through Saturday, October 14 and included many exciting activities such as spirit week, bonfire, pep rally, float decorating, and hall decorating as well as the crowning ceremony, game and dance.
Hall decorating took place on the Friday before Homecoming Week because school was dismissed Monday, which is usually when the event takes place. The bonfire took place at the north end of the football field following the junior high football game Thursday, October 12. At the bonfire king candidates Luke Brin, Kennis Becker, and Matthew Hageman spoke respectively about Pride, Heart and Spirit. The Booster Club announced the winners of the senior football players’ jerseys. The cheerleaders and dance team ended the bonfire with The Cardinal Routine.
The pep rally to recognize the candidates began at 2:15 on Friday, October 13 followed by the parade that started in front of the high school and ended downtown in front of the police station. Head Coach John Petrie spoke about having determination and confidence. King candidates Josh Brungardt and Lucas Hachmeister then followed with their individual speeches encouraging the fans to come and support them.
The Homecoming King and Queen were announced prior to the game that evening. Luke Brin and Samantha Hixon were named King and Queen. The 2005 king and queen, Josh Eichman and Jenna Fellhoelter, participated in the ceremony.

Plainville Pride
I was born and raised a Plainville Cardinal. I will always be a Plainville Cardinal.
You’re probably saying, “Big deal its only a few sports for a few years.” You’re right it is a big deal. Most of us have been waiting for our opportunity to be a high schooler and everything that goes with it.
My personal favorite is dressing in the home maroon football jerseys and playing in front of the town. The reason its my favorite is because I was born saying, “Go Cards!” I was awe struck at how big and fast those “high schoolers” were. Now that I’m the one playing on Fridays, I take great pride in knowing there is a kid looking up to me. Even though our record was 3-7, there was still that little kid in the crowd saying, “Go Cards!” and just waiting for this opportunity we have.
That’s what I want more of at our school. I want to be able to say I am from Plainville and be proud of it. I want everyone to make the most out of the four years of being a Cardinal before it’s over. This would be a good graduation message, but that’s too late. Take it upon yourself before you slack off in practice or break the law and remember that you are from Plainville. Do it yourself, do it for your family, and do it for the little kids saying “Go Cards!” and last but not least do it for your town. That is Plainville. We are Plainville.
The 2006-2007 Plainville Cardinals boy’s basketball team has signed up 20 players.
They will be coached by Head Coach Tom Frederking and Assistant Coach Ronnie Wolf.
Coach Frederking feels that the big strengths will be that they have played together for the most part as one unit. So, they know what their teammates do and how their teammates work.
Five seniors will lead the Cardinals. They are Jarrett Claridge, Caleb Wyatt, Matt Klein, Josh Brungardt and Matt Hageman.
The juniors are Tanner Dix, Aaron Becker, Toby Ruder, Ben Gehring, Joe Becker, Jason Dinkel and Justin Lacey.
The sophomores are Ross Copeland, Dylan Lynch, Eric Sears, Terry Sumner, Zach Green and Chris Fellhoelter.
The freshmen are Jaden Perkins and Alex Dreher.
What Does It Mean?
The Cardinal Booster staff asked some members of student body what the word “triheens” means.
“It is the type of rash that Kennis gets when he touches a frog!” – senior Dominique Gilardoni.
“Love.” – junior Justin Lacy.
“How many points Justin Lacy can sore in a basketball game.” – sophomore Patrick Reif
“Spanish for three hungry hippos.” – junior Bretta Mick
“Three hungry hippos.” – sophomore D.J. Brown
“Three hens.” – freshmen Josh Plante
“Three handkerchiefs.” – senior Emily Jones
“Three hens.” – freshmen Paige Wilkerson
The real meaning of “triheens” is stockings without feet.
Scholars’ Bowl reestablish at PHS
Scholars’ Bowl reestablish at PHS
Scholars’ Bowl reestablish at PHS
Fifteen students are helping reestablish Scholars’ bowl at PHS under the coaching of Karen Wilson and Rita Carswell.
Varsity scholars’ Bowl members include seniors Josh Brungardt, Seth Keas and Emily Jones and juniors Toby Ruder, Justin Lacy, Ben Gehring, Heath Rath, Joe Becker and Deidre Jones.
Junior Varsity scholars’ Bowl members include sophomore Ross Copeland, and freshmen Nick Luna, Kendra Sturgeon, Jaden Perkins and Kendra Husmann.
The JV team attended their first met at Palco. “While they didn’t place, I was still very pleased with their performance,” Wilson said.
Members who attended were Sears, Luna, Sturgeon, Perkins, and Husmann. The varsity team attended their fist meet Nov. 9 at Stockton. Members who attended were Brungardt, Ruder, Lacy, Gehring and Rath. The team took fourth place.
The next meets they have scheduled are both in January. January 6 is a varsity meet at Logan, and on January 23 the team goes to Phillipsburg. At this time, they don’t know which members will be attending those meets. They want to enable all members of the team to participate in at least one meet.
Each round in an event consists of two teams consisting of a minimum of three players. At the Stockton meet, Plainville was able to have a maximum of five members per team plus one alternative. In competition, teams are asked sixteen questions, which can be taken from the following categories: Language, Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Fine arts, Science/Health and Year in Review. Questions at a local school meet can include a sports category, but not at regional or the state competition.
The junior Class held their annual magazine sales during the first semester of the school year.
The goal for the class was to sell 300 items, but they did very well and exceeded this amount with 315 magazines sold. Heath Rath and Justin Lacy helped a big portion by selling over 70 magazines each.
However, top sellers did not earn prizes this year. Instead, QPS offered the class an increase in the percentage of the gross sales. If they did not meet the goal of 300 items, they would receive 2% of the gross sales, but if they met the goal, they would receive 3%. The money the class earns from magazine sales helps with prom expenses.
Although the Lady Cards had a tough season, there were a few highlights that made it memorable for the team.
The girls started out strong winning one of their home matches against Stockton with close scores of 25-21 and 25-22.
“It felt great to beat Stockton, especially in our first game,” junior Jessica Thompson said.
The team battled through the rest of the season with many close games, but only secured two more wins. The next win came against Tri-Plains at the Ellis tournament with scores of 25-20 and 25-21.
The last win of the season was the match against Lincoln at Lincoln. The girls rallied hard with scores of 25-14 and 25-16.
