New tile/air conditioners in PHS
Phs has recently installed new tile floors and new air conditioning. Werner heating and Plumbing put in new air conditioning. Only certain teachers' rooms received these: Mrs. Turnbull, Mr. Thummel, Mr. Gohl, and Mr. Sims. It was a good place to start because their side of the building got so much hotter then the other. More will be installed next year. The total cost of the new air conditioning was $18,235.

The companies that put down and tore up the tile floor were Asbestos Removal and Maintenance of Wichita. It took them two weeks to get them done. They started August 10th and finished August 22nd. The total cost of the tile floors was $5,235.

Junior High Students In Algebra I
This year, eighth graders are coming over to the high school and taking algebra with the high school students. Eight students are involved: Luke Brin, Joshua Brungardt, Seth Keas, Vanessa Owings, Caleb Parson, Megan Plante, Pierce Reif and Jason Williams.

"They are doing great. They work hard. They as good questions. They pay attention. They really want to learn," Jon Thummel said.

According to Thummel, there are two reasons for them to come over. First, to have more students through Algebra II and geometry by the time they take the Kansas Math Assessment. Second, to have them ready to take Advanced Algebra their junior year for dual credit College Algebra.

The students seem to feel like they are able to stay caught up.

"It's just a little challenging at times," Owings said.

The eighth graders do not think it is hard in Algebra being with upperclassmen.

"No, I know most of them good from my older brother," Owings said.

Williams and Brin also agreed.

New Students find their way around PHS
Plainville High School has three new students this year. They are freshmen Josh Brackeen, Allen Brackeen, and Alicia Hall.

Josh previously attended Osborne Junior High. He is involved in FCCLA at the moment and he is also planning on going out for track. Brackeen says "PHS is a bigger school, and it has better activities.""I believe it has been a great experience so far," Josh Brackeen said.

Allen Brackeen recently moved here from Osborne. Allen strongly dislikes his old school when compared to PHS. He is in FCCLA, and is planning to go out for basketball and track. So far, he thinks PHS is cool.

"PHS is a nice school with lots of nice people in it." Hall says.

Theresa Kehler and Eric Gohl join PHS staff
This year, two new teachers have joined the staff of PHS. They are Theresa Kehler and Eric Gohl.

Gohl is the new geography, history, and government teacher. Gohl attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Prior to teaching at PHS, Gohl taught in the junior high. He taught sixth grade world history, seventh grade Kansas history and geography, plus eighth grade American history.

"The high school students are more mature, mostly, and understand assignments better. They also know how to apply what they're learning to their lives," Gohl said.

Gohl is the tennis coach and assistant wrestling coach.

Kehler attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Kehler teaches physical education for the sixth and eighth graders. In the high school, she teaches freshman physical education. Kehler also is the coach for junior high girls' volleyball, and she will coach the junior high girls' basketball.

"I like Plainville a lot. Plainville has all the services I need for my family," Kehler said. "I prefer a smaller community to raise my son Cory."

Summer Basketball
This summer nine PHS students took part in playing in four basketball tournaments. They where junior Joel Hrabe; sophomores Ross Balthazor, Brandon Frederking, Lance Gosser, Josh Hrabe, and M.J. Klien; and Freshman Justin Casey, Brock McDowell, and Scott Peavey.

The team competed in the Hays Shoot-out going (2-4), the Salina tournament going (3-3), the Colby tournament going (4-2) finishing with a fourth place finish, and finally the TMP Summer Sizzlin' tournament with a (2-4) finish.

"I thought that our summer team played well throughout the summer. We played a lot of great competition all year. A lot of guys gained experience through the summer that should help when school begins," Starting point guard Justin Casey said.

Coaches of the team where Jerry Casey and Randy Hrabe.

Athletically Challenged
by chantel plante

Okay I'll admit it, I'm not the athletic type. So the other day in athletic development we were playing our usual Wednesday game. Of course you would be able to see a bunch of sweaty students running around telling over a stupid ball. Over in the dark, little corner you could find me, trying to avoid getting any attention so I wouldn't have to be involved in the game.

All of a sudden I look to my right; I see Willie Ruder charging at me head on! I knew I wouldn't have enough time to move. To me, it seemed like time itself had stopped! It felt like it was happening so fast it almost seemed slow, It felt like I was in the Matrix or something; time seemed so slow; each second was like an hour. Then here comes Willie, all I could do was put up my arms for whatever defense it was worth. I could hear my own heart pounding in dread of what was about to happen, I could feel the sweat rolling down my brow.

Then, the moment I was dreading, all I could do was yell, "NOOOO!" The response I got, "CRUNCH!" There I was, lying on the PE floor. As I got up, everyone checked to make sure I was okay, and they all got a real good laugh!

The moral of the story is, "Stay out of Willie's way!"

SUMMER VACATIONS

The Booster asked several students what they did over their summer vacations.

HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS

Representatives of local V.F.W. Post #8871 presented Plainville High School with framed copies of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights September 17. Jack Selbe and Chick selbe presented the documents to a representative group from the government class and English classes in a short ceremony in the front hall. Jack Selbe is heading up a project with an ultimate goal of having these historical documents displayed in every school in the country. Other area schools also received copies of these documents on this day in recognition of the anniversary if the signing of the Bill of Rights. As part of the ceremony, the veterans encouraged the students to be knowledgeable about their government and to participate in it by voting and by serving on juries when the opportunity arises.

Ten Lady Cards Out for Tennis

Seven girls are leading the Plainville tennis team. They include seniors Carissa Fredrickson, Tierra Fuzzell, and Alexandra Garvin. Juniors include Aryn Gavrin and Kira Schumacher. Sophomores out are Kelsey Bjornstad and Amanda Husmann. Those rounding out the team include freshmen Katie Nicholas, Amber Cooper, and Makenzie Becker.
"Our strengths are that we have five returning varsity lettermen from last year. Our weaknesses are our lack of years and years of experience. "Many girls that we play have been playing serious tennis since grade school," Coach Gohl said.
"I think that we are going to have a great season. We have had a two-weeks break till our next match, so that's more time to improve on our weaknesses," Bjornstad said. Garvin said "Our weak parts that we have are our serves and our backhands. Our strong parts are our love of the game and our willingness to try hard."

New Boxed Salads

In this 2002-2003 school year there have been numerous changes, but one of the changes that will effect everyone is the new salads. This year the salads are served in a box instead of the "make your own."

Every morning the teacher will take lunch count for who wants regular lunch or salads.

"The salads are served with a salad, sandwich , yogurt, fruit, and milk," Marianne Nelson said.

If you ask for two sandwiches in the morning you can get two. The reason for the new salad routine is that Pat Bethal left last year and nobody ever got rehired in her position.

Now the question is, will the students enjoy the new salads.

Junior A.J. Garcia said, "Not really because it isn't enough, and what about the big kids, but the sandwiches are pretty good."

FCCLA kicks off year with activities

The FCCLA organization is a great way to get life changing skills. This organization helps young adults develop leadership and communication skills. FCCLA also has plenty of activities to help members grow together, and by doing this it makes the organization grow greater.

At the beginning of ever year, FCCLA has a Banana Split Party. The party helps the members get to know each other by socializing and having fun. It also helps them with their communication skills.

Freshman Josh Brackeen said, "So far it has been good; I had tons of fun bowling and getting to know other members," she said.

"I talked to previous members and they told me about all the fun things they did last year." Brackeen said.

Freshman Selbe Renk also thought that bowling was a lot of fun. "It gave me a good opportunity to get to know the other members," she said.

The District B Camp is another FCCLA tradition that is held every year.

Tucker said, "It is usually here every year. We are located in the center of our district."

Smith Center, Osborne, Stockton, Downs, Victoria, Hoisington, Plainville, and Phillipsburg attended the camp.

"District B Camp helps members learn leadership skills. All the students that attended were district officers, and they learned different leadership skills," Tucker said.

PHS has new Coaches/Sponsors

PHS has three new coaches and sponsors.

Tracy Fellhoelter is the new head cheerleading sponsor. Last year she was the assistant sponsor. Fellhoelter said, "Everything is going really well. It's been very busy but enjoyable. Things are going well, I like the new responsibilities I have to take on. It's a little overwhelming at first, but now things are going great."

Last year Bob Mickelson coached girls junior high basketball in Ellis. Mickelson said, "I like PHS very well, and I'm excited to start basketball." Mickelson is looking forward to coaching a new team and is ready for the challenge.

Angie Armbruster is also a cheerleading coach along with Tracy Fellhoelter. She attended school at Washburn university, then transferred to Fort Hays State were she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in political science. Armburster said, "I think PHS is a great school. I am a graduate from PHS, so I see some things that are the same and some things that have changed. Tracy and I have a really great group of ladies. So I believe our cheerleading season will be great."

First Day For Freshmen

The Cardinal Booster staff surveyed many freshmen and asked them how they liked high school and what they thought of their first day. Here are some of their responses.

What did you think of your first day of high school?

"I was really nervous. I was afraid to go to Mr. Thummel's class, but it turned out okay. I was also scared I'd pretty much get beat up by the upper classmen." - Caroline Hrabe

"I thought it was fun to see everyone." - Justin Casey

What do you like most about high school?

"I like the sports." - Brock McDowell

"I get to hang out with my older friends, like Lauren Hemphill." - Katie Nicholas

What do you least like about high school?

"We have homework from Mr. Hilgers everyday..HaHa!" - Chelsea Moos

"I hate walking down the hallway and all of a sudden being pushed into my locker by my older brother." - Caroline Hrabe

"I don't like being a freshman." - Josh Eichman

Cardinal Marching Band marches at KSU

The Plainville Cardinal marching band went to Kansas State University Band Day September 14. To get into this the band had to send in an application, and the university notified Band Director Connie that they were invited to KSU Band Day.

There were 34 bands total that were able to participate, and over 3000 participants.

At 3 a.m. the band boarded the bus, and at 6 a.m. they stopped in Abilene at McDonalds for breakfast.

At 8 a.m. the band arrived at the Kansas State University campus where they put their uniforms on and got lined up for the parade which started at 9 a.m. They marched for approximately one hour, and then they traveled to the stadium to practice for the half-time show.

Reishus said, "The band and dance team did a superb job marching and playing during the parade."

At 1 p.m. the game started, and the band performed at half-time. They then waited for the buses while getting drenched in the rain.

On the way home, they stopped in Salina for supper at Western Sizzlin, and they arrived back at about 9 p.m.

Stuco Camp

Stuco members attended a Stuco camp at Emporia State University this summer. The camp lasted from July 21 to the 26th.The students who attended were seniors Alexandra Gravin, Carissa Fredrickson, Naomi Thompson, Abby Stagner, and Danielle Moos.

Throughout the day at camp, the students participated in many activities. These activities included officer training sessions, idea swap shops and leadership training.

"It is a great experience," Sponsor Steve Buresh said.

At this camp the students learned better leadership and communication skills. "It was an awesome time. I wish everyone got to experience this camp," Garvin said.

Thirty- four men hit the grid for PHS

This year 34 men are out for the Cardinals. They look to make some noise in the very tough Mid-Continent League.

They are lead by seniors Willie Ruder, Scott Wise, and Jason Rath; Juniors Joel Hrabe, Ryan Lovelady, Alex Smetana, AJ Garcia, Ben Ruder, Adam Meyers, Tyler Nelson, Tyler Marcotte, Brad Lynch, and Matt McCune; sophomores MJ Klein, Catlin Zahorsky, Josh Hrabe, Seth Brin, Ross Balthzor, Jake Weigel, Paul Owings, Paul Nuckols, Brandon Frederking, Travis Williams, Lance Gosser, and Mark Axelson; and Freshmen Justin Casey, Brock McDowell, Scott Peavey, Tyler Brudgardt, Connor McMullen, Dalton Mick, Jacob Keas, Garrett Frederking, and Josh Eichman. Cheerleaders

This summer the Plainville Cardinal Cheerleading squad made a trip to Lindsburg for cheerleading camp. They stayed in the college dorms from June 24-27. The girls learned 6 sidelines, 9 cheers, and 2 dances.

“I think this coming year will go well because we all work well together. The girls are able to work hard and long hours to perfect their positions” Sponsor Tracy Fellhoelter said.

At camp the girls were able to have contests. There was a jump off and All-Star tryouts. Sophomore Morgan Malin placed 2nd in the jump off. Senior Danielle Moos and sophomore Kelcee Meitler qualified for the All-star trip to London.

“My favorite part of camp was getting blue ribbons and when I fell on my face before I competed in the jump off,” Malin said.

“ I thought cheerleading camp was a lot of hard work and long hours. You have to work together as a s team at all times.” Freshman Jenna Fellhoelter said.

“ I think that the oncoming year will be great. I feel that over the summer we got closer as a squad. We always have our different opinions, but I think once everyone gets the idea of how things go we’ll be just fine.” Junior Julie Hrabe said.

Dance Team attends camp at Emporia

The Plainville Cardinal Dance Team once again attended one of the biggest dance camps in the nation.  The dance team attended this camp from June 14 to June 16 held by NDA at Emporia State University.

They learned many new dances that they will be performing though out the home sporting events.  The dance team did an outstanding job performing the dances that they learned at camp bring home many individual Excellent and Superior ribbons.

The dance team has been cut down to nine members this year.

Sophomore Kristen Meitler said, “I feel that I have been able to learn dances faster now.  At camp we had to learn one thing, go over it, and then move on to the next dance.”

“My favorite part about the camp was seeing new dancers and how they dance,” freshman Raquel Marcotte said.

This year’s 2002-2003 dance members include seniors Leslie Tipton, Tierra Fuzzell, and captain Jamie Stahl; junior Michelle Reishus; sophomores Kelsey Bjornstad and Kristen Meitler; and freshman Raquel Marcotte, Brooke Stahl, and Rachel Thompson.

Tennis Tourney

The Varsity tournament at Hays consisted of Russell, Colby, Hays, Plainville, and Victoria.

"We had a good start with a fourth place finish at the Trego Round Robin. Our toughest day was the Hays Round Robin because it was the highest quality of competition we've seen this year," Coach Gohl said. "Ability-wise our team is about equal to our team last year. However, the girls this year are learning to to the small things better and that's resulted in several more wins."

Competing in the singles bracket were Sophomore Kelsey Bjornstad and Junior Kira Shumacher. Competing in the doubles bracket were Seniors Tierra Fuzzell and Lolly Garvin, and Senior Carissa Fredrickson and Junior Aryn Garvin.

Bjornstad won her third match 8-5 and lost her fourth match 3-8. Schumacher lost her first match 0-8 to Hays, but won her second match 8-3 to Victoria. Fredrickson and A. Garvin played a tough match and won their second match to Victoria 8-7 (7-2). They played hard their fourth match, but ended up losing 6-8. Fuzzell and L. Garvin lost their first match 4-8 to Hays. They played really hard their second match but lost it 2-8 to Victoria.

Overall the team got 5th place.

Conner McMullen

Volleyball/Football players gain experience

Over the summer, high school volleyball players attended camp on August 5th-9th. The volleyball girls went to Hutchinson, Kansas. They scrimmaged and did a lot of hitting. They all learned how to go out on the court and play as a team and have fun.

"My favorite part was all the scrimmaging we did!" -Junior Jessica Casey

The football players also went to camp in August 5th-9th. They went to Lincoln, Nebraska, and they reviewed basic formation and plays for the upcoming season. They also did plenty of conditioning.

"My favorite part was conditioning because I needed to get in shape and it got me motivated!"- Junior, Alex Smetana

Cards enjoy some wins, suffer some losses

The Cardinals kicked off the season opener against the LaCrosse Leopards September 6. The Cardinals started off slowly, but managed to play a fair first game. The Cards struggled offensively because they could not execute. Defensively, they struggled to wrap up on tackles. Although it was a tough game, the 34 men never gave up until the end. The final score ended up in LaCrosse's favor 49-20.

The next game didn't get any easier. The Cardinals face the 3rd ranked, 3A Norton Bluejays. The Card came out fired up and produced a long drive down deep into Bluejay territory. Although, they could not score, it was an impressive drive. Once again, the Cardinals struggled defensively which isn't ideal against the Honorable Mention State running back. So, once again the final score wasn't in the Cardinal's favor, as Norton won 42-0.

Coach Lee Weber said, "We have shown improvement in our last tow games, but we still can not be happy with our performance either games. We need to eliminate some of the fundamental mistakes we had in the last two games and continue to be more consistent in some of the good things we have done if we want to be successful." Phillipsburg would be the next challenge the Cardinals would face. It was a hard-nosed, ground-out game that the Cardinals took control of. Plainville came out on top for the very first time of the year with a big win over a ranked team, 14-8.

September 26 it was Homecoming for the Cardinals. They would face the very difficult Ellis Railroaders. Ellis came out though the whole game. Plainville always had the long field, which would make drives long and difficult. On the other hand, Ellis had great field position the entire game, which made drives short and put a lot of pressure on Plainville. The game didn't tour out well for Plainville. They suffered a though league loss 36-8.

"The next contest is against the Smith Center Redmen. It should be a tough game but, one we could have success in. Bring on the Big Red from the North," Coach Weber said. As of Monday, September 30, Cardinals stats include senior, Scott Wise, with 52 carries for 320 yard and two touchdowns, 8 receptions for 124 yard and 1 touchdown. Wise also ran back a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Senior Jason Rath has 21 carries for 12 yards, 35 pass attempts for 162 yards and 1 touchdown. Junior Alex Smetana, has 82 carries for 331 yards and 1 touchdown. Sophomore, Catlin Zahorsky has 7 carries for 15 yards and 2 catches for 15 yards. Sophomore MJ Klein has 2 receptions for 30 yards.

Many return to fill out Cardinal volleyball team roster

Four returning varsity members will be leading the volleyball team this season. They include seniors Jamie Stahl, Lacey Hamblet and Heather Hrabe. Sophomore Kelcee Meitler will also be returning. Other varsity players include juniors Amy Normandin, Michelle Reishus, Kelsey Ross, Julie Hrabe and Jessica Casey.

"It's going to be a challenging experience, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with being challenged. Getting used to a new coach and new methods is difficult, but once we get used to everything and develop a team relationship, we'll be awesome, unstoppable," H.Hrabe said.

Returning players for a junior varsity are seniors Naomi Thompson and Morgan Fellhoelter. Juniors are Jordyn Wilkens, Makenzi Rempe. Sophomores include Morgan Malin, Kristen Dinkel, Kristen Meitler, Megan Becker, Heather Schonthaler and Paige Lowry. Other players include juniors Katie Beckley and Jordan Finnesy.

"I think we have a lot of potential and can win if we concentrate and work together," Malin said.

The freshman players include Mindi Baldwin, Jenna Fellhoelter, Gloria Ruder, Raquel Marcotte, Chelsea Moos, Holly Chew, Jessica Wilkerson, Caroline Hrabe, Selby Renk, Racheal Thompson and Brooke Stahl.

"I think this season will turn out successful. We just need to work together, and word hard. We need to keep up the intensity." Stahl said.
