Two new teachers join the staff at PHS

Two new teachers have joined the faculty at PHS. They are Connie Reishus and Cindy Harlan. Reishus is the new vocal and band teacher. She is also the dance team coach. Reishus attended Emporia High School. She graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor of music education. Reishus completed her graduate work at Kansas State University. Prior to PHS, Reishus has taught at Burlingame, Kansas; Doland High School in Doland, South Dakota; Clark High School in Clark, South Dakota; and Stockton High School in Stockton, Kansas.
"I think PHS has excellent faculty and students who care about their school," Reishus said. "I like Plainville because I have lived here over 16 years and the people are friendly."
Harlan received her undergraduate education at Ottawa University. She completed her studies at Fort Hays and K-State. She earned a degree in Social Science. Besides teaching at PHS, Harlan has also taught at Abilene, Kansas and Ottawa, Kansas.
"I love a small school and knowing everyone," Harlan said of PHS and Plainville.

Stucco Members attend camp

Seniors Cara Hansen and Sarah Koehler attended Stuco camp this summer at Emporia on July 16-21. Some of the activities at camp were guest speakers, a dance, formal banquet and Indoor Olympics. The main speaker was Earl Reum. Overall, the purpose of STuco camp was to help students develop better leadership skills.

On Septemeber 19, members of Stuco attended the Regional Stuco Leadership Conference. The members brought back ideas that will help their council. The following people attended the conference: Kelly Wilson, Cara Hansen, Sarah Koehler, Jared Ganoung, Danielle Moos, Danielle Meitler, Heather Hrabe, Quintin Plante, RYan Williams, Matt Renk, Amber Burton, Kelcee Lowry, JESSICA Casey, Kelsey Ross and Shanna Fellhoelter.

Computer Repair Class adds to Curriculum

The A+ Computer Repair program covers computer architecture, computer literacy, and both basic and advanced computer repair. Students will recieve hands-on instruction in all areas and have the opportunity to build a PC. Then using the PC and training equipment, the student will setup hardware configuration, software configurations, basic networking, and client servers.

Kim Albers, Candice Vigil, and Amy Becker wrote a grant to the State Department of Education for the Technology Literacy Challenge Fund in order to have this program. They received a grant of $20,00. In order to teach A+ Computer Repair, Albers attended a workshop over the summer in Stillwater, OK. Albers will be teaching the class along with assistance from Becker.
At the completion of the course, students will be prepared to take the A+ Certification test. This test is internationally recognized as a validation of knowledge, technical skill, and customer satisfaction skill required as an entry-level computer service technician.
Kelly Wilson said,"We haven't really started working much with the computer, but overall I think the class is interesting."
Two sophomores are taking the class. They are Jamie Marcotte and Ryan Williams. The five juniors taking the class are Christopher Fogle, Joe Glisson, Mandy Kraushaar, Jason Lindsey and Tanner Nelson. There are nine seniors taking the class. They are Heath Albert, Matt Axelson, Corey Brin, Hannah Deibert, Stephanie Fellheolter, Cole Fredrickson, Trent Fuzzell, Adam Glendening, and Kelly Wilson.

PHS begins Year with Indoor Olympics

Indoor Olympics was held on August 21. The seniors walked in to the song "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band. The Olympic torch was carried by Superintendent Don Grover and Teacher Cindy Harlan. THe cheerleading squad entertained PHS with a dance they learned at camp. The games for the evening included RIver Walk, Pass the Gas, Ring Toss, Human Alphabet, Relays, Skin the Snake and Buck Buck. For the River Walk, the seniors were in first place; second place went to the juniors, close behind were the sophomores; and last place went to the freshmen. For Pass The Gas the seniors recieved first place, followed bye the juniors, sophomores, and freshman. The Ring Toss went well for the seniors and they received a big score of 61. The Juniors had 2, followed bye a tie with the sophomores and freshman with 1. The Human Alphabet was also won by the Seniors. Following the seniors were the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. The seniors received first place in the shoe relay. Second place went to the juniors, third to the sophomores, and last place to the freshman. Skin the Snake was won by the seniors, followed by the juniors, sophomores, and last place to the freshman. The final game was a big upset for the seniors. The juniors walked away with a win during the Buck Buck competition. The seniors trailed behind them for second place. They were followed by the freshman. Last place went to the sophomores. Stuco President Kelly Wilson said, "I think the evening was a big success. I think everyone had a good time!"

September Boosters

Matthew Rodriguez and Cara Hansen are the Cardinal Boosters for the month of September.
Rodriguez is involved in football, basketball, track, PepClub and UMYF. His Favorite movie is Tombstone and his favorite song is "Hollywood Bank Robbery" by Snoop Doggie Dogg. His favorite food is Italian, After high school he would like to major in political science but is undecided where he will attend. When he is not at school, he likes to watch sports, dance and hangout with his girlfriend.
Hansen is involved in vollyeball, basketball, NHS, CYO, Stuco, FCCLA, Pep Club, ROPE and Dance Team (captain). Her favorite movie is City of Angels and her favorite song is "For the Movies" by Buckcherry. Her favorite food is waffles. After high school she plans to attend college. In her spare time, Hansen likes to play sports and hang out with her friends.

FCCLA participates in Fair; kicks off year

The Plainville FCCLA entered a fair booth at the Rooks County Fair. The theme for the booth was Discover the Magic. They received a blue ribbon. In years past, FCCLA has received the blue and purple ribbons.
FCCLA also held their annual Membership party. This year students participated in a co-ed volleyball tournament. The teams had to have four girls and two boys or two girls and four boys.
Sponsor Sharri Tucker said, "I think the party was a success. Everyone seemed to be having fun!"
An upcoming event for FCCLA will be the Fall Leadership Conference, which will be held in Phillipsburg.
FCCLA's goals this year include to involve more members in activities, and to participate in more community service activites and projects.

Darnell and Plante declared All-Stars

Janell Darnell and Heather Plante were chosen as All-Star Cheerleaders at Cheer Camp this summer in Manhattan, Kansas.
An All-Star cheerleader must be ready to perform for an audience with spirit and pride. Each cheerleader had to try out in front of a panel of college cheerleaders. They performed a dance, a cheer, and a chant. Darnell recalls that it was very nerve racking.
"It's a great honor," said Darnell of the award.
Of all the girls trying out for All-Star cheerleaders, only 7% were chosen. The benefits of an All-Star Cheerleader are the opportunity to perform at the New Years Eve Parade and stay in London, England for a week. The girls also received a medal at camp.

Cheerleaders attend camp at KSU; sponsor children's camp

The PHS Cheerleading squad attended camp in Manhattan, Kansas on June 13-16.
While they were there the squad learned many cheers, sidelines, and dances. Heather Plante and Janell Darnell were also chosen as All-Star Cheerleaders.
Sponsor Bonnie Staab said,"Camp helped the squad learn to work together and learn new material. It was beneficial in uniting personalities and becoming friends."
Money-makers that the cheeleaders held were the Little Girls Cheer Camp during the summer and a dunk booth at the Paradise Creek Festival.
The cheerleaders are busy preparing numerous pep assemblies for upcoming year.
Cheerleaders for this year include senior Danielle Meitler. Juniors on the squad are Heather Plante (Co-Captain), Rhiannon Becker (Co-Captain), Janell Darnell and Jennifer Bland. Sophomores are Lacey Hamblet, Heather Hrabe, Naomi Thompson and Danielle Moos. Freshman include Jordan Finnesy, Julie Hrabe and Morgan Buck.

Gridsters defeat the Hill City Ringnecks, 20-13

The Cards defeated the Hill City Ringnecks 20-13 at Hill City Friday, September 15. The first touchdown of the game was scored by senior Justin Balthazor in the first half. In the second half, the Cardinals came onto the field fired up and ready to play. Two touchdowns were scored in the second half by Staab. The Cardinal's season opened to a 0-26 loss to the Ellis Railers. Week two improved to a score of 14-33 against the Norton Blue Jays. There are twenty-nine men out for football this year. The team is being led by the returning lettermen. They include seniors Cole Fredrickson, Trent Fuzzel, Jason Stahl, Balthazor, Jared Ganoung and Alan Austin; juniors T.J. Staab, Cody Pfaff and Luke Wise and sophomore Scott Wise. Other players include seniors Matt Axelson, Byron Knight and Mattew Rodriguez; juniors Matt Renk, Tanner Nelson and Mike Langholz; sophomores Jason Rath and Willie Ruder, and Freshman Dustin Kraft, Alex Smetana, Brad Lynch, Adam Meyers, Matt McCune, Keegan Turnbull, Ben Ruder, Ryan Lovelady, Joel Hrabe, Nathan Florian, and Tyler Nelson. "We have come a long way since the beinning. We are playing and have gelled together as a team. We have also improbed in all aspects on offense and defense," Coach Wade Ditter said. Practice for the 2000 Cardinal football players began this summer for their mini-camp on July 24. They had two-a-day practices at 6 am and 6 pm. Camp ended on July 27, 2000. The team reported back to practice on the weed of August 14-18.

Netters bring home second place

The PHS varsity Volleyball team brought back second place from the Sylvan Grove tournament. The first match was against Ell-Saline. The Lady Cards defeated them in two games. The final score for the match were 15-13 and 15-3. Their second opponents were Lucas-Luray. They defeated them with a score of 15-4 and 15-13. Palco was ready to play the Lady Cards next. The Lady Cards fell short the first game, but defeated them the next two. The scores for the match were 13-15, 15-9 and 15-9. The teams final match was against Sylvan Grove. The Lady Cards were degeated in two games. The final scores were 6-15 and 6-15. There was a three-way tie for first place between Ell-Saline, Sylvan, and Plainville. Going on defensive points, the team received second. Coach Lisa McGaffin said, "Right now our record is 7-3, and this bunch of girls is off to a great start to a very successful year." Members of the carsity team include seniors Stephanie Fellhoelter, Hannah Deibert, Cara Hansen, Ashlee Grover, Kelcee Lowry and Sarah Koehler. Juniors include Shanna Fellhoelter, Heather Plante, Janell Darnell and Lacey Brin.

Tennis competes in Ellsworth Varsity Quad

The varsity tennis team played in the Ellsworth Varsity Quad September 26, 2000. IN number on singles, junior Rhiannon Becker lost her first match 6-8. Becker lost her second match1-8 and her third 1-8. In number one doubles senior Melissa Hageman and junior Audrey Bjornstad lost 2-8, 1-8 and 6-8. In number two singles, sophomore Tierra Fuzzel won her first match with a score of 8-4. Fuzzell lost her second match 6-8 and came back with a win for her third match 8-4. Fuzzel placed second in the tournament. In number two doubles, junior Katie Weigel and sophomore Lolly Garvin lost their first and second matches 3-8 and 0-8. Weigel and Garvin captured a win of 8-6 in their third match. They placed third at the quad tourny.

Harriers compete at Hill City Sept. 21

The Plainville cross country team went to Hill City on September 21. Freshman Jordan Finnesy and sophomore Mandy Cox both ran JV. Resulst were Finnesy witha fourth place finish with a time of 14:56 and Cox with a ninth place finish with a time of 15:20. Senior Kelly Wilson and junior Ashleigh Turnbull both ran varsity. Results were Wilson with a 42nd place finish and Turnbull with a 51st place finish. The cross country team held their Plainville Invitational on September 7. Results were Wilson with 26th, Finnesy with 31st, Cox with 46th and Turnbull with 48th. The opener for the Cardinals was at Ellis on August 31. Finessy finished with 29th place and Wilson finished with 31st. Other resulst were Coz with 41st place and Turnbull with 43rd place. This year's team conists of Wilson, Turnbull, Cox and Finnesy. The team is coached by Norma Finnesy.

Dance team attends camp; learns new routines

The PHS Dance Team attended camp at Emporia State University on June 16. THe team learned many routines that they will be using during the year. THe team's goal this year is to entertain more people at the home events according to Sponsor COnnie Reishus. Reishus said, "I think the squad learned how to work together and learned many neat routines." Members on the 00-01 squad include seniors Cara Hansen (Captain), Stephanie Fellhoelter and Hollie Marquess. Juniors are SHanna Fellhoelter, Renee POst, STacy Dreher, Audrey Bjornstad and Lacey Brin. Sophomores on the team are Leslie Tipton, Jessie Eisiminger and Jamie Stahl. The only freshman this year is MIchelle Reishus.
